Why spend money on software that wont work if you choose to upgrade?

I think that Windows and Mac OSX are now roughly comparable in ease, elegance. But what I dislike about Windows, despite the better pricing, are the constant unwanted, unasked for updates, and the (necessary) anti-virus programs that play havoc with the machine. NOT saying there are no viruses for Mac, just saying that I think you get about the same level of protection without all the anti-virus crapware that you get on Windows. That is to say, the Mac OSX operating system out of the box offers okay protection against the casual idiot.
The biggest problem with the Mac OSX is that without a ****eload of RAM, it runs sluggish with just a few large programs open. I don't know if Windows users have that same problem.

My wife just a had a problem with her Mac -- the new operating system (free) has some problem with the zoom magnifier required as she is visually impaired.
We worked with them on-line three sessions for total of about 7 hrs, plus took it to the shop for another 4 hrs - and they send a CD (free) with a backup system if it crashes again. NO CHARGE! I could write books about the problems and expenses dealing with Microsoft in the past decades. The Mac runs faster, has no virus problems and Apple doesn't use up 1/3 of my functionality spying on what I do. There is no comparison with the service -- and they actually call back when scheduled.

After four years, the hard drive on my Mac laptop died, which was a drag even though most everything was backed up. The surprise was when I took it to the Mac store, they replaced the drive free of charge, even though my three-year service plan was expired. That was back in 2011, and I'm still using it today. Next year will be that laptop's tenth anniversary. Some webpages give it trouble, and I can't update the OS any further, but it's amazing how useful it still is.

Tearing my hair out yesterday, trying to work with a student and his Windows laptop. Every second, new ads popping up that refuse to go away, unrequested updates happening, interminable virus scans. We got about 10 minutes of real work done in two hours. I am seriously considering selling him my 10 year old Mac laptop for a nominal sum just so that we can make some progress.

A few years back I bought and old laptop that had...it was Windows 95 or 98 or 2000 on it (can't remember, now). We had some old software, and games the kids used to play, and thought it would be great to have a laptop that would play those for fun/nostalgia. Unfortunately, the laptop had been re-set to it's original condition, and going online, apparently all the old updates, service packs, etc..., were no longer available. Didn't think about that. So it ended up being pretty useless for those purposes But, I only paid $20 for it, so not the greatest loss in the world.

After a while, I got tired of it glitching up on me and I gave it back to Goodwill to use for parts or sell to someone else, whatever they wanted to do with it. About a month later, I got a bonus check and used it to pick up the HP computer I used now.

Yes. I know. That's why I stated above that I use my phone. Thanks.
Back to the topic. Can anyone tell me what a PC or a Mac is? |

As far as I know....
PC means a personal Computer and refers to one that runs Windows is from the Microsoft camp. Mac means an Apple Computer. -Mary (I'm no expert) Mowder |

I've used PC's since we first got a home computer back the very early 90's. Desktops, then adding laptops for work... Never had a problem with any of them. First couple of lower-end laptops I got for work started getting slow to power up after 4-5 years, but my most recent was a Lenovo T410 I got in 2008 w/ Windows 7 Pro, and it is still a champ. I did just upgrade, though.
In 2009 we decided to experiment, and we got an iMac for our home. After 4-5 years it (a) really started getting very slow to power up, and (b) the Mac versions of Word and Excel took forever to come up. So, for laptops (don't forsee purchasing another desktop) I'll stick with Windows, but I also have an iPad because of app selection. Phone is currently Android, by preference, but I could envision myself going back and forth other the coming years.

Yes, that is the biggest weakness of the Mac in my opinion--especially with Microsoft products! They don't ship with enough RAM. You'll find a lot of the sluggishness disappears if you upgrade the amount of RAM you have. You can never have too much.

Somewhat unrelated, but I just got a new Windows Laptop (Asus ZenBook UX501VW), and love it, so far. It was my first device that did not come with an optical drive, so I got one the next day.
It came with a small software disc that the instructions said to install. Well, for some reason I didn't want to put software on my computer for a device that I'll use mainly to install programs or watch a movie or transfer files to a CD for storage. So I didn't install the software and just started using it. It works fine.
