Okay, I know Memorial Day was yesterday, but I wanted to share something that made this mother proud of her two sons. Since Memorial Day is to honor our fallen heroes, I only felt it right to take my sons to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Capitol lawn in Little Rock. We spent some time there just reading over the names and looking at the statue. We actually came across some last names belonging friends...names unique enough where we thought it might be a relative of our friends. After spending time at the memorial, my sons didn't ask, "Can we go home, now?" Instead, they asked if we could visit other statues on the grounds. So, our Memorial Day consisted of visiting the Vietnam Memorial, the Medal of Honor Memorial, War of 1812 Memorial, Confederal Soldiers Memorial, Women of the Confederacy Memorial, the replica of the Liberty Bell, and a display honoring the Little Rock Nine (okay, the last two don't actually deal with veterans, but they were on the Capitol grounds). The only thing that got us back in the car was the big crack of thunder that made Mom insist it was time to go!
My kids had questions, and I did my best to answer them. I think we had a good day. Margarette
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

Well done, ma'am - and well done, kids!
You'd never have gotten into Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day, but if you ever get a chance to see the changing of the guard there at the Tomb of the Unknowns, you'll never forget it. |
