Hello Everyone,
After speaking with CAM President Joan Caesar, I have clarified her thoughts on this subject, and locked the other two topics until further notice. The point being made here is that Mrs. Caesar would like to entertain the idea of moving the convention, but to make it happen, needs a strong base team in the proposed area. She is by no means "giving up" or "passing the torch" but solely putting the idea out there if a group of keen people are willing to help with the challenge. Few people know what kind of work goes into a convention of the caliber of CAM, and many only complain of what few faults it has. So, until further notice, all thoughts about moving the CAM convention can be posted here. These thoughts are to be directed toward solving the problem some people have with having CAM convention in Kitchener, so any ideas pertaining to positive solutions to moving it around will be entertained here. I hope we can get somewhere. Thanks, Ben Proudfoot |

Hi Ben,
I would like to be clear that I have no complaint with Joan or the one CAM convention that I was able to attend. (Contractual obligations can make it tough to get a week end free.) Having said that, if it is possible to move the convention, I for one would be in favour of it. It is not that I have a problem with it being in Kitchener, it is more that I would enjoy travelling to another part of this country to attend a great magic convention like CAM. On the proposal issue, I know that Joan has close ties with the IBM (her column appears regularly in TLR). Would it be at all possible to use that resource (local rings) to create a team of "keen people" in a region (Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver to name a few) where the convention might be held? Knowing magicians, I'm sure there would be some who would like to help bring a convention to their community if they were approached. Also, I would like to point out that I do not have any experience in putting together a convention of any kind. I cannot imagine the amount of work and organizational skills that are required. What I do know from experience, is that it is possible to book and promote shows in a community that I have never visited. Telephone, fax and internet can book a theatre, hotel, advertising, etc... for shows. Hotels have staff who specialize in working with event coordinators for just such things. I also know from performing at conventions that the host often holds the convention in a distant place from where they are from. This getting away, creates part of the fun of attending the convention. Is it possible that the template for creating these conventions has now been created? Joan and her associates (who I have no complaint with in any way and I would like to go on record to say thank you to her and them for all their work) have the knowledge of organizing these conventions. Is it not possible to then apply these skills to creating a CAM convention that is able to take place in another major urban centre in Canada? To sum up, could not the experienced CAM convention committee, with help from a distant IBM ring (or other volunteers), organize a convention in another city? I believe, as a proud member of CAM, that there would be support to attend a CAM convention in a different city, should the convention executive choose to do so. Wishing you all the best, Rob |

Hi Rob,
Your comments are greatly appreciated. In fact, you have inspired me to make a poll of sorts. ***This by no means dictates where the next CAM convention will be held.*** ***Please select of the following options for your ideal place to have a CAM convention.*** Vancouver-3 Calgary-2 Kitchener-2 Ottawa-3 Montreal-6 12 Halifax Just post your vote, and it will be taken into consideration. Thanks, Ben |

I'd like to see Montreal as well.
I would also enjoy any of your other choices as noted. I would also be willing to help in some way from my remote location if possible. Rob |

I'd like it to be in Howick, but, if Mike Deslauiers is going to be there, then Montreal would be fine!!!

Having to travel for CAM is not a problem for me, because I love my country, I LOVE CAM, and I ESPECIALLY LOVE travel!
However, moving such a small event away from south-central Ontario, while probably inevitable at some point, will probably be tough, simply because 1/3 of Canada's population is within a 160km radius of Toronto. While there certainly are other large cities in Canada, that 1/3 is a rather imposing fraction!

The Toronto as "the centre of the universe" is poison to a fledgling National orgainization in Canada, and is the reason a great many Canadian magicians have not joined CAM.
The ground appears ripe for another group to apply to FISM for national recognician (which is allowed within the FISM bylaws) and move to challenge CAM as a representative body here in Canada. It still isn't yet clear to me why CAM doesn't realize this and move quickly to offer a vision statement and mandate that illustrates how CAM intends to truly extend its scope across the country. This is NOT a complex process, and it should be the first item on the CAM executives agenda. |

As for my pick of city, I'm afraid that I cannot narrow it down to just one. I would go with one of Victoria, Niagara Falls, Montreal, or Quebec City. If I didn't already live in Alberta, I would have mentioned Calgary and Edmonton. You can count this as a vote for Montreal, and / or recognise that the list of cities in the poll lacks a number of other very good options.
