Hello all! I'm looking forward to participating here at the Magic Café. So, here's a brief self-introduction:
My name is Keith Beckman, and I'm currently a grad student at the Medical College of Georgia. I've been doing magic since my tenth birthday, when I received a copy of the Klutz magic book (which still has the best introduction to coin and thumb tip magic for any age). I pretty much stopped doing magic during the last couple of years of high school and all of undergrad, simply due to busyness. I've "picked up the wand" again in the past six months, and have been giddily getting all my old routines together. I prefer ungimmicked slight of hand to fancy purchased tricks. I'll use thumb tips and split cards (oh, and Osterlinds fantabulous Breakthrough system!), but that's about it. My current love is cards, but that's at least partly because I've been waiting so long for the copy of Bobo's I ordered through the local Borders to come that I got impatient with my coins. I'm excited about joining in, and hope to learn from all of you as I rediscover magic. Cheers! Keith

Welcome, was is your favorite card trick or routine? who is your favorite magician? Well, I prefer pure sleight of hand, but since I started using the BCS a few months ago, I've been addicted -- I don't necessarily have any favourite routines with it yet, but I do have a favourite line. When I have the spectator select their card, I get my glimpse as I return the pack to the box, set it off to the side, and say, "We don't need the deck anymore." Simple? Yes, but you should see their eyes bug out when I say it. I get the most cries of "Impossible!" with simple BCS card calling. My other favourite effect at the moment is Scott Cram's "Sweetest Sound". (Which, by the way, seems very complex to a spec, yet requires only one sleight, and is otherwise self-working.) Favourite magician? None at present. I've been influenced by several, but I've not "taken in" much of the newer literature and shows. Most of my magic has come straight from books, and old books at that. I was always much impressed (especially as a child) by descriptions of Harry Kellar's illusions . . . Cheers! and Thanks for asking! Keith
