Hey Everyone,
I am hoping that someone can help me find out what the name of the pyro is that creates a sparkle and a crackle that quickly follows the sparkle in mid air when set off. I believe that you can see it in Brett Daniels montage on his website when he is in the spike box escape and the roller blinds release to show he has vanished, and then the pyro goes of on the sides. Then once we narrow it down, can someone direct me towards a seller that they have had a good experience from. Any Advice would be greatly appreciated. Jared |

Jared,
I'm not sure that I've got this right, but, if you are looking for a effect which is triggered "mid air", then I'd suggest you are looking for something called an "air-burst" effect- these tend to be confetti / glitter loaded, as you would have to be extremely careful where you have any form of hot fallout from an aerial effect; you should be able to obtain these from any supplier which carries Le Maitre effects, and would be fired from any bare-wires controller, as it would be a ProStageII effect. If I've misunderstood what you are looking for, please let me know. Sorry- just had a thought. If you are talking about a floor-mounted (or, rather, surface-mounted) effect which creates a sharp "crack" before shooting a jet of sparks / sparkles, you'd probably looking at a gerb. For cold fallout, you're looking at an ice gerb (suitable for table mounting, for example). |

Jared,
I would save your time on this research. It is very expensive to do on a regular basis and fire permits are an absolute must. As things stand now after Rhode Island and Louisiana, you cannot strike a match on stage with the proper permits. Steve Chezaday can give you the inside dope on this stuff. Richard

Jared, that description doesn't sound like anything in the PyroPak or Le Maitre catalog.
You may be looking at a custom effect from somebody like MP Associates, or Eric Tucker from PPA (these are only a couple). The "crackle" is a small explosion, so you're getting into some seriously regulated pyro. Give LunaTech, who make PyroPak, or Le Maitre a call and describe the effect to them, they'll tell you right away if it's off the shelf or not. Failing that, try calling MP Associates or somebody like Eric Tucker. Custom pyro effects are extremely expensive, so if you go the custom route, you should have a firm budget in mind. |

Custom pyro effects are extremely expensive Agreed- even more so than "off the shelf" pyro, which I reckon still averages about £4-5 per shot... considerably more if you are using confetti cartridges! |

I have another question. Where can I find an effect or effects that do this.
Have a dove pan or tin can for that matter. The pan or can is held in my hand and at my command (just looking at it), it burst into flames. My buddy and I were throwing this around yesterday during a demo shoot and we were thinking having something glowing and igniter fluid on the other side and just tilting the can and fire starts. Any help appreciated! Ive been doing the fire wallet like this (sort of) but like we all know, its too well known for sure.

The pan or can is held in my hand and at my command (just looking at it), it burst into flames. I would suggest that there are three main ways of igniting something: 1.) Flint striker / wheel (a la fire wallet) 2.) Glo-plug 3.) Electric match Personally, the idea of tilting something so that lighter fluid hits a flame just sounds unpredictable, which is dangerous- I would not attempt this myself, and wouldn't construct anything on this basis. If you are looking for flames, then I would consider a spark wheel in conjunction with a pad soaked in lighter fuel / paraffin. You would have to spark the wheel manually, but, that just sounds so much safer than what you are proposing currently. An electric match is not right at all (used for explosive effects) and a glo-plug is best used for igniting flash cotton, which in turn can trigger flash paper. (Using a glo-plug to trigger flash paper can be unreliable, and can also cause damage to the glo-plug quite easily). An electrical ignition would probably look smoother than a spark wheel solution, but, it would be harder to put together and keep maintained, really. If you did want to go down that route, perhaps consider a glo-plug triggering flash cotton, which, in turn, ignites a soaked pad- you'd need to experiment carefully with the projection of the flash cotton, I'd think, as I wouldn't want to put a glo-plug near a prolonged flame, to avoid damage. |

I have a Merv Taylor dove pan that has the igniter built in.

Jared ... don't get in over your head. Give this a try .. I think you will find it very effective. There's a product out there called sparkle additive and a little of this with some flashpaper will do the trick. I don't recall what Brett uses for what you mentioned .. but I pretty much introduced him to the world of pyrotechnics.
I have an ATF Licence and even more fun .. an Illinois Explosives Licence. Each state varies on what is required ... but the sparkle additive is very safe when used in small quanities. Now back to the lab ... Steve |

I believe Kevin James sells a self-igniting dove pan. For most pyrotechnics, I'd check with Theatre Effects, Inc.

Tim Starr and RNT (the original), Merv Taylor, and Morrisey, all made self lighting fire bowls. I used Tim Starr's for years before taking it out of my act about 10 years ago. It used a flint striker. Even then the use of fire was getting harder and harder.

Great help gang! I don't care for the flint wheels, had lots of problems with them. I have the El Duco fire wallet and its fantastic! I have to get down to some research now! Today I tried it with a matchstick and did the tilt and that is a little unpredictable.

Well, the more I looked, the more MINI FIRE BOWL by HERB MORRISSEY
is the way to go. Suppose to be just AA battery and an easy to find igniter (fluid of course). If anyone uses one of these, please post. I did a search on the Café and not much on these. Ive seen these used on stage only in Vegas. I know the dove pan gets pretty hot until you put the lid on. I would hope the fire bowl is somewhat shielded.

How bout using flash paper/ cotton instead of lighter fluid and saving the risk of fluid spilt on the floor, table top, curtains, in your travel case, or on you. Smells a whole lot better than burning petro chemicals. They make flameless lighters, ***ize one and build to your hearts content. Good luck.

Thanks Doc, I have flash paper but may need to get me some flash cotton, I would gather the cotton would burn a bit longer.
