In the post I started that Merenkov could not stand to read, because he would have to read past two periods it started with a simple question. I want to ask the question again.
In all of these DVD's you have spectators that see performer after performer. don't you think they have a clue of how a lot of things work? My vote for worst spectator would be Merenkov. why? If your effect was longer than 30 seconds he would be staring at the lights, or talking on his cell phone. |

Wow, this thread was intended to be a light-hearted look at some of the more difficult spectators people have seen in magic videos. For those with no sense of humor, please proceed directly to the mentalism boards. (I’m kidding, I’m kidding... )

This is light hearted. I don't hate any spectators. Anybody that will watch is good enough for me.

While I would prefer that spectators not over-react (it's annnoying, IMHO), there's no real need to have especially enthusiastic ones on tape. Or to cut to their reactions (and miss out on some of the magician's covert, but oh-so-important action (sadly, this has indeed happened)). After all, these are instructional videos, and unless you're out there showing the performance sections to your friends, it's not that important to have incredibly energetic spectators; just ones that will be misdirected properly. Really. That's the most critical thing you need to see on a teaching video-- how to manage the spectator(s). Some of the best tapes I've learned from had terribly unenthusiastic spectator responses. The one that comes to mind is David Williamson's Sleight of Dave. It's very entertaining and has great magic despite "Abe's" reaction (or lack there of), but I didn't need a hyperactive spectator to know how good Dave's material is or how entertaing Dave is. There are many great videos that don't have any unnecessary spectators in them too. The recent New York Coin Magic video is a good example. I think that the useful thing you might get from having an audience is seeing how a pro handles magician-crowd / audience interaction... but we really don't see that very much either-- no one in the videos ever says "it's in your other hand" . Seeing a pro's response to real-life situations would be great for learning.

I remember "Abe". On that tape, while I would have preferred to see "Abe's" reactions, it didn't seem to matter too much as I was busy being misdirected by Dave's great magic. At least "Abe" didn't distract. I always imagined that "Abe" was as impressed as I was by Dave's tricks. I also agree with the rest of Frank's post even if it might have run on too long for some people

In some of the L&Ls is a girl called Mary. She was one of the spectators who used to sit up front with the performer in their early videos. More recently, I see her back in the crowd. I surmised that after sitting through a lot of videos (and perhaps some explanation segments) she is a little too "wise" to be a good "up front" spectator. |

Dave is great. I think he is the only one that does not have a clue what is going on. I think he is the only one that does not go and buy the DVD as soon as its released. I think that for the same reason that "mary" is now on the back row. Dave is always front and center. The guy has been around forever and still does not appear to understand how a DL works.
Sorry for the length of that answer. I am really just messing with you merenkov. I know what you were trying to say. |

Yeah Merenkov, I do get what you're trying to say too. I couldn't resist being a little snarky on this thread but I wasn't being ill intentioned. If however, I have caused you offence, you have my sincere apology.
Peace out Dave |

I agree a number of the L&L people are a little over the top... As for Abe in the
Williamson tape/dvd. I had asked Dave about this a long time ago. He said at the time it was about two in the morning (cheapest studio time) and he had seen that trick about 8 times. Tom |

Is it general consensus then that the two "worst" are Jon Cooke and David...anyone know a surname?
The one that gets me is the worst acted script reaction ever...the two girls in the Dan Harlan Rubberband Magic set when asked if they want to see a card trick...We know it's staged, but do we need to be told so brutally? |

On a Larry Jennings video, he performs at a table for a girl, who is either a statue or a zombie.....No reaction .... In a way, very funny... ..

How about the guy that sits in on the Magic Makers DVD's? I think he might own Magic Makers. He has no reaction at all. You would think he would try and sell it a little better.

In Pavel's L&L Mental Magic video (a very good video, too!) he repeatedly selects one particular mulatto- or Hispanic-looking woman from the audience who just laughs and laughs to the point of being (to me) irritating.
It would have been much better, in my view, had Pavel not chosen this particular woman over and over again, and I'm surprised he did so, especially in light of what other mental effects performers say about specifically not choosing spectators who seem overly enthusiastic to assist.

Without doubt john from the l&l (the guy with the moustache).
I always ask myself if he took any drugs or if he is really so insane or if he try to be enthusiastic for the audience behind the tv screen. I don´t know, but he is very annoying.

Joseph and MagicChris nailed it! That girl is on 'Classic Magic—The Larry Jennings Video' and is SOOOOOOOO wearing a toe tag. After witnessing his Invisible Palm routine her response is 'ooh'. OMG she has to be the WORSE I have seen!!!

I think Jon is the worst of the bunch. We need more spectators like those we see on Devil's Picturebook and on more recent note (or not so recent as it was taped a far way back) the specs on Paul Wilson's Royal Road to Card Magic DVD set.

I like Dave. He isn't as over-the-top as Jon.
Jon is actually quiet on the Dan Harlan's 'Pack Small, Play Big' mentalism dvd. He may be annoying, but I would much rather have him in my audience than a heckler. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Jon were to confront a heckler. |

I am not sure of the dvd. I was watching it at a friends a while back. It was a watch stealing dvd. Every one in the dvd seemed to be in on it. At this one part this guy was stealing a wallet and about ripped the mans pants off and he acted like he never felt a thing.
