The Boy Apprenticed To An Enchanter
by Padraic Colum lib.rochester.edu That is a cool story and having read it I was wondering if the magician of today takes on an apprentice to teach the art.

I have not yet read the story, though I will. I have had the idea, recently, to take on an apprentice, both in and out of character at the Texas Renaissance Festival. Sadly, what I would be looking for in an apprentice for such an engagement is a rare thing indead. I would be looking for a younger individual with little or no magic experience at all, but with acceptional performance abilities and experience. I have mentioned it several times in this and other forums, magic is the easy part. Were I to take on an apprentice, it would to be to guide them in magic, and to a far lesser degree, in the performance of magic. I would vastly prefer to work with someone that I wouldn't be required to handhold through the theatrical portion of our art. I'm not certain I am either prepared, or capable of teaching that part.

Those who were truley qualified to teach I also found to be very busy practicing what they preach ie performing everywhere and little time to teach. If they were retired they were usually globe-trottin' about and enjoying life and just as difficult to find during their down time. But those who've helped anyway they could, have provided me priceless and life-time lessons in magic. I will always credit and mention their kindness and greatness. Yeah they are out there if you can find one who'll consider you worthy of their time. The search is every bit as strange as complicated friendships. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted: Jun 5, 2006 7:30pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I forgot to mention that I recently contacted a great magician and performer for advice. As I stated above, many of those that I've reached out to were in fact actively performing and polishing their skills/acts just as they've claimed and preached to others. No need to mention his name here but he did contact me while on the road and a while later we talked over the phone regarding my questions and need for help in certain things related to my act. If you weren't born into a family of great magicians, it becomes one's responsibility to seek out the expert for advice and direction. Don't be discouraged if you find the help seems to be halfway around the world as that's where some of my help came from! Depending on how you look at it, it can make for a wonderful journey. On the flipside, ever notice how the children of great magicians rarely followed in their steps - much less even learn a single technique? So it goes... I know I'm shouting here but feel it's worthy of notice THE Café IN SOME OF MY EXPEREINCES HAS LIVED UP TO IT'S MOTO "MAGICIANS HELPING MAGICIANS" IN THAT I FOUND SEVERAL AWESOME, KNOWLEDGEABLE, AND EXPERT PERFORMERS HERE WHO HAVE HELPED ME! A couple of them probably wish I'd go away but you have to realize there's little difference between 'dedication' and 'insanity'. Couldn't ask for more or get any luckier baby! Nice!!! |

Thank you, I couldn't agree more with the comments about the Café. And thanks for your thoughts.
There is a set of people in England who I think are much like magicians. They are top lawyers known as Barristers; The tools of there their trade are words which they use to persuade, they are the advocates in high courts, the ones who wear the gowns and wigs and latter become the Judges. They are very learned guys and refer to each other as my learned friend and act like great lawyers in the court theatres. I have a friend barrister and I have a rough idea of how they work: The barristers work from small offices called chambers maybe six or so barristers in a chamber. They are self employed with no guarantee of work. They get their clients via, their cases, through solicitors who are layers who act as agents for them. The whole set up is a bit pompous and steeped in tradition they to are a bit unapproachable and you can go direct to them but only via a solicitor if you need then to act for you. When you go to see them in there chambers as a client it almost like going to see a great wizard. Anyway they work like this: You go to law school and qualify but then you join a chamber as junior barrister and you are taken on as a pupil to master barrister to learn him and slowly you get your own cases. The problem is it is a bit exclusive but I sometimes think I would like magicians be a professional body set up similar to the way barristers are in England. I think you would need to have some experience with these guys to understand what I mean when say they are like magicians.

Chris Pratt, MIMC, who is an officer of the Magic Circle of London, is a barrister. He is also a really fine magician. So he has the best of both worlds, I suppose.
Benny Hill used to refer to a young lady who was caught sliding down a barrister.

I am sure I was told once there is a magic club somewhere in one of Inns of Court but I am not sure as it was many years ago. While I was looking for it I found this odd story.
"Ford Cross was a North American mentalist who presented himself as genuinely psychic. He duped women by telling them they were cursed and would only be released by having sex with him. Many gullible women agreed. One was the wife of a policeman, who duly took Ford Cross to court. His mentalist friend, Bob Cassidy - who also happened to be a barrister (a lot of lawyers in the magic world) - defended him in what he called "the last witchcraft trial" and got him off. It's nasty but not illegal to lie in order to get people to have sex with you."
