It's taking over isn't it?

I've seen two performances in Surrey this week & I'm seeing another in Edinburgh in July. The question is - is it just a fad, or the final nail in the coffin.

Thoughts ...

Which programme are you referring to, and where can I get with it?

I have no clue what Gopher Ventriloquism is either. A Google search doesn't help either.

Gopher Ventriloquism is a movement in performance art & installation art founded by a small company of performers in London in 2003. The first season of performances consisted of two gophers, one telling a story, throwing its "voice", & the other mouthing the words. The audible, sensible portions of the story were provided by a team of actors behind a curtain.

Some of the original performances ran for as long as 16 weeks without interval, and audiences came and went paying for an hour or so of the action. They began in pokey little performance spaces above pubs, but a good deal of money was made at the beginning and the shows ventured into the mainstream. Animal rights demonstrations outside the theatres only served to promote the shows further. In larger performance spaces the shows strengthened their accessability by intergrating themselves with organic fine art exhibitions and demonstrations of the consequences of "bisterbile" drugs.

The original company has now disbanded, but there are at least 100 independant gopher groups in Britian, and this year will be the second occassion the phenomenon had been seen at the Edinburgh Festival. Whether or not popularity will increase or burn out is any ones guess. Pasq.

For the record, I was very much a witness to this movement in the early days, & involved to some extent on the fringes.

At the time I remember an academic called Ronald Haymen wrote in "The Guardian" that GV had satisfied a cultural need in the right place & at the right time, & was capable of articulating the human condition more effectively than any other artform since Beckett.

RWhit, just to be clear: They're 'actual' gophers on stage, not puppets.

Well, then I'm not worried at all about it usurping true Ventriloquism...

Sounds like "Gopher Ventriloquism" is simply a unique (and admittedly funny) animal act.

Nothing, and I mean nothing can compare to a expertly manipulated and scripted Ventriloquist act...

It's a very real form of Magic, seeing an audience actually accept a ventriloquist figure as a 'real' persona.
