Effect:

The mentalist shows his "card collection" of some souvenir playing cards from various casinos. Each card is from a different casino and each face has a different value. A spectator is invited to cut off some of the cards for himself (no force) and the remainder is given to a second spectator. Each freely shuffles their respective packets, even turning cards face up or face down as they wish, and each spectator thinks of a secret number...nothing is ever said or written down. The packet is reassembled and again shuffled by each spectator if they wish; again some cards face up and some face down if they desire.

The performer shows the cards to the spectators and they only think of either the particular casino or playing card value that falls on their secret mental number as the cards are shown. Since the cards are in such a mess either could be showing. Nothing is ever said or written down by either spectator yet the performer not only tells each spectator whether they thought of a casino or a playing card he then goes on to name the exact casino names or the values of the playing cards!

My Comments:

I recently received Double Down and I have performed it several times now. This is poweful mentalism, yet it is very easy to do and the effect happens just like in the description. What I like about this effect is that it uses real casino playing cards which opens the door for all kinds of presentational ideas. I have a lot of fun performing this because I can work in patter about Las Vegas and gambling which the spectators find entertaining.

There isn't really any memorization involved with this effect, but you do have to pay attention and remember a few things while you are performing it. There is one part where memorization is helpful, but not necessary. Bryn provides several methods for attaining the needed information for this part that do not require any memorization at all. If you like what you hear in the description, definitely check out Double Down. This is a very nice piece of mentalism.

By the way, I recently began using Third Degree Burn to reveal the face value of the card at the end of the effect. This has given me great reactions so far, some of you may want to try this out.

Bryn sent me this effect and I agree with Matt. It's quite a lot of fun to do and one of the few packet mentalism card effects I can recommend. For those who want to check out my comments, which includes a variation that I've been doing, you can go to my webpage on it.

You'll note that I DO NOT SELL IT! The page is simply informational and the link takes you directly to Bryn's page so you can buy direct from him.

Thanks so much guys for taking the time to post a review of DOUBLE-DOWN!

Recently two of my favorites in the field gave me great reviews of DOUBLE-DOWN!
Both Richard Osterlind and John Bannon have been great inspirations to me. To have them give me great feedback regarding DOUBLE-DOWN! has been huge thrill to me. Their reviews and more information on DOUBLE-DOWN! can be found here:
http://www.mindmagic.myfoolmoon.com/catalog.html

I also want to give a big thanks to Jheff for giving me a review and a purchase link from his site. He has NO monetary stake in this whatsoever so that makes it even more special to me that he took the time to not only write his review and put it in his Newsletter but give some additional routine ideas and post a link to my website. He also kindly did this for my "$" serial number divination routine and both are most appreciated!

When I first put together DOUBLE-DOWN a couple of years ago it was for obvious reasons (to those that have a set) a limited run of 52 sets. I was fortunate that it received great praise on the Center Tear mentalism forums and they sold out in almost a couple of weeks. Through some requests I decided to make another run. Jheff pointed me in the correct direction for the necessary real casino cards and I again made the plunge. And, just for fun and the challenge (again, if you have the original version.....) I made it with all NEW casinos. A challenge, yes, but worth it, I think.

Thanks for the interest!

Bryn

OPPS!...here are the reviews by Richard Osterlind & John Bannon I tried to post above above:

Here is what Richard Osterlind had to say:

"I just got Bryn’s Double-Down. This is a killer card effect that has great props! You show a bunch of Casino cards (the kind you buy directly from the Casino with holes punched in them or corners rounded) from all the major hotels in Las Vegas. The cards are fairly divided between 2 spectators and mixed up. I mean they are “really” mixed up both face-up and face-down! They are reassembled and further mixed if you want. Then the 2 spectators each “mentally” choose a number and a card as they are fairly fanned in front of them. The mentalist then names either the Casino name or the card itself depending on what way they are facing. It is direct, fun and uses great props!"

and from John Bannon, author of Smoke & Mirrors and Impossibilia:

"'Double Down' is exceedingly clever. The more I work with it, the more I appreciate its subtle and sophisticated construction. Bryn's use of individual casino cards is inspired and very commercial. One of the best, most interesting tricks I've come across in a long time; double (thumbs) up for 'Double Down.'"

Thanks,
Bryn

First and foremost, this was the first effect I have ordered from Bryn. I must say that his kindess and promptness in service was fantastic. He was very willing to work with me and answer many of my questions via email. I will be a repeat customer.
Double Down, to me, is serious mentalism that can be carried in your wallet at all times. It's handling is clean, and the props are very inconspicuous. (Well, that might be misleading. The cards aren't gimmicked at all, but the method to divine that special information is pure genious.) The idea of the "slop shuffle" and using the front and back of the cards as predictions elevates a strong mental effect to much more. It really seems to the laymen, or magician for that matter, that the circumstances are extremely fair and very random. The fact that the magician could divine any information will baffle anyone.
This effect takes very little memory work to perform. You will have to briefly store some information during its workings, but nothing over the top.
Double Down leads itself to wonderful presentations. You have to admire effects that are constructed in such a way that the method and handling are simple, which leaves the performer the majority of time to focus on the presentation. It is the latter that will make the effect. I like to devine the "casino" by having the spectator pretend to be on the Vegas Strip. I have them imagine they are taking a photograph of their specific casino's brightly colored sign. As the photograph devolps, I have them show me the imaginary picture. It is then that I can blow them away with an impossible devination.
Wonderful effect Bryn! 5 out of 5 for me!

Thanks for the review, Brad.

I certainly appreciate the reviews Richard Osterlind & John Bannon gave me initially for DOUBLE-DOWN and I am glad that these sets are getting out thee more and more into hands like yours...I LOVE your idea for the mental photo for one of the reveals!

Thanks!

I am going to Las Vegas in December and I plan to perform Double Down quite a bit while I am there. I mean, what better place for this effect than Vegas!

*** cat....well, he is out now...lol!

Yes, Sabitu, as it will anywhere, it will play well there of course! The last time I was in Vegas was last August when I was home on leave and it found its way into a few casino bar impromptu performances quite nicely!

I did make up antoher 52-set run of these and sent most of them to Jheff to have them for sale at the the MINDVENTION convention. (As much as I wish I could be there I am at least glad some of my effects will be!)

I kept back a few sets to sell off my website right now in case anyone is interested. A great friend of mine filmed this effect for his new upcoming DVDs. I have no idea if it will make the final cut (although I am honored he at least filmed it for them) but that was a great honor to me as far as this effect is concerned.

Thanks all for the reviews!

I'm not trying to fish here, but I just wanted to know -- in this effect, do the spectators really think of a number, as the ad seems to say, or do they cut the packets and the number of cards they each have becomes their number?

Bugjack:

Simply put, you are correct, and here's why:

I use Richard Osterlind's description of the effect, posted above, and he does put "mentally" in quotes for a reason. The number of cards cut off by the first person is their "secret" number and remainder is left for the second participant.
This is completely fair & completely justified. Jheff's review above comes with a link to his site where he details how he even turns this "phase" into a seperate effect. Nice!

Any other questions, please feel free to PM me and ask!

Thanks for the interest,
Bryn

I just received this item. I also received the Business Coin Prediction which BTW is an excellent, baffeling and easy to use. More so IMO than this item.

I have a curiousity about Double Down however, isn't it easy to trace the fact that you know the secret #? I mean, 10 cards isn't a lot of cards to see a spec cut to and shuffle and flip up and down. Any thoughts on this from performers of Double Down.

I like the idea of the Casino Cards and maybe my first impression will change once I start using these cards.

Thanks,

John

It's right here:

http://www.mindmagic.myfoolmoon.com/photo6.html

The description on the site pretty much says it all. It's only $10. It's a great carry around item. There really isn't much more to say than what's on the web site.

I hate to retype things.

If you have any "secret" questions you can PM me.

I don't know if is a secret question, but:
I can do it "using" euros, or I have to find a motivation to "use" dollars?
Thanks

Once you learn the method, you could adapt it to just about any currency, even non currency items.

You can also use your own cards.

This effect is brilliant, and I carry it with me all the time.

Business Coin Prediction from Bryn Reynolds sounds very similar, in effect, to something I saw on a Max Maven DVD ( cannot remember which one )?
