I still would have posted exactly the same post as I did. It is misleading to call something FREE twice in an email, post the link and then mention that there is a small set up fee.
The idea is that he gets us in with the word free, maybe even getting us to click on the link and THEN mentions that there is a small fee. If this were a *** enlargement spam I would forget it in a second. I'm sorry I missed the seven words. But for a fellow magician to rely on dodgy spam techniques like this makes my blood boil. I've buried my apology in the above text. Hope you find it. |

Do you really need a dictionary to understand what this means: “there IS a small setup fee.”
Maybe he could had worded it better. But he didn’t lure you to the site BEFORE telling you about the fee. Can’t you folks appreciate that? Is getting a selling email really a big deal? I bet everyone of you run your mouths telling the person on the phone how good your show is, Before you tell them the price. You hide the price. Is that fair? Why don’t you tell them up front how much the show costs? Or tell them your really not the worlds greatest. Because, it’s called “selling.” I will have to say, this is about the most honest bunch of folks I’ve ever been around. Tom

I don't tell them my show is FREE, describe it and then say "Oh it costs $550".

I think they have FREE LISTING for the internet search sites- google will pick up the FREE LISTING as it is in the top 2 lines of this page http://www.birthday-party-magicians.com/......253-pm:p
as well as this page http://www.birthdaypartypro.com/listing.html Make no mistake- this is why they have done it. Now they also have a question What's the difference between a free listing and a paid listing? There are many differences, so I'll just highlight the main points... You do not receive a professionally designed, 6-page, BPP web site with a free listing Your free listing will not include a photograph or a link to any web site, yours or otherwise. With a free listing, you do not receive access to any area of the BPP Members Only site. BPP cannot endorse or stand behind any magician with a free listing (only because there is no application process or customer ranking system). Free listings will always appear lower in the directory than Standard or Elite BPP members they state what is the difference between the free and the paid----it's not actually free It's like saying- I'll do a free show for you but it will cost you $200 for petrol it's also like in AUstralia when you advertsise a price Magic show for under $400 and then later in the sales leter type- GST not included. I just bought a Retractable banner stand which was advertised as $270 vey good price full color 2 meters tall it actually cost me $430 with additional charges being artwork- That I supplied and GST. It is bad business to mislead and it is what they ar doing |

I thought of another example of this idea in action, all around us here in North America.
Frequently, WalMart portrait studios or Sears portrait studios advertise a free 8x10 photo or a free package of photos. However, you do have to pay a sitting fee. The photo is free, but the photographer's time is not. I wonder how many people have written to complain that Sears or WalMart uses "dodgy marketing" when promoting their free photos? I see flyers all of the time for this offer. BTW, thanks for the apology, Nicholas. Ice - if you paid for the retractable banner, even after knowing they didn't give you full information up front, did you write and complain about false advertising? Why did you write and complain about false advertising to Tim, and not this other company? Why did you pay for the product, if you feel strongly that they misled you? - Donald P.S. If I understand correctly, we have to be careful about quoting portions of Tim's website here, because of his copyright.

I'm not taking sides here but will say that of all the FREE things I've been given, I seem to use, like, and benefit more from those that cost me a pretty penny instead.
If it's free, you may find yourself paying for it later. Guys, I would prefer to honor and pay a vendor well for whatever it is I seek. And vendors, know this, you don't have to sugar coat your goods if you do honest business selling quality products. No bigee. I would have more respect for a vendor who states at website that there is NOTHING FREE at the website. That there is no free library, no free tools, no free weekly tricks etc., nothing, zip, nada, nothing free as the only things housed at the site are things worth their price tag. I know that can be subjective if we get down to it but you get where I'm coming from? Personally I can't stand FREE stuff as all the FREE stuff I've seen or been given has been pretty much JUNK. |

I re-read some of my earlier posts, and I think I am not making one of my points clear. So I will re-try.
My main question is this: What gives anyone the right to assume that the term "listing" and the term "set-up fee" are the same thing? If anyone takes the time to look around Tim's site, they will see that he offers some paid listings, and now a free listing. However, with the paid listings, there was a "set-up fee". It would only be logical to assume, in light of that observation of how he was running that site previously, that with a free listing there would also be a "set-up fee". Again, the listing is free. The set-up fee is not free. Because those are different things. Tim only said the listing was free. Just like I said earlier for the free photos. The photos are free, the sitting fee is not. We have no right to assume that those are the same thing, in a photo session. If one of those is free, it does not mean all are free. On my cell phone bill, I pay a separate fee for the "monthly service plan", than I do for the monthly "system access fee". Those are different things. And the "tax" is a different fee again. If one of those is free, it does not mean all are free. - Donald

Call your cell phone co. and ask questions and the answer pretty consistent "Pay it or no phone".... By the way, you know that as of the first of this month, this site is charging you $3.99 a minute charged to your phone right? It's FREE but the 'browsing' is not. |

I understand the fees I pay on my cell phone bill. If you seek the information, and ask the right people, in the right way, with the right attitude (key!), you can understand.
When people start to whine, it shows an attitude of blame, not one of understanding and accepting 100% responsibility for what is happening in their life. - Donald

What about “Buy One, Get One Free” ads. Are you really getting one free? Or paying half price and being forced to buy two?
From time to time daycare centers will run ads “free registration.” Think parents don’t pay a weekly tuition? Supermarkets have coupons all the time for free products, and then you read the fine print, “with purchase.” Yes, they want you to buy something to get the free item. FREE is the most powerful word there is in advertising. All businesses use it, and customers understand what it means. We all go for the free stuff, but we know we’re paying a price to get it. But getting back to the main topic, all I’m saying is the same as what Donald is saying. “The listing is free. The set-up fee is not free.” How could he give it to you free without setting it up? Can we really expect him to pay for that? The photo example is good, but Tim’s product is even better. It really does require a set-up in order for it to work. There is nothing to give away until it's set up. Once it's set up, it's Free. Tom

Actually Donald, I understood the bill so well I got rid of the cell phone 3 years ago and haven't looked back. I didn't whine but took action to my satisfaction. Tom brings up the buy one get one free and questions if there is a deal there as well. Today I purchased six cans of spray paint for a project. I got a good deal on the purchase with the buy one get one half off. The deals I don't benefit from are Albertson grocers with their SALE! SALE! SALE! with numerous grocery items discounted to rock bottom price but you must buy 10 of them! Seriously 10 of them! These are great deals if feeding a family but the reset of us don't get in on the deal. |

I think that we are used to bad sales tactics to the point where we accept it.
Completly Free to me means no costs at all- realisticly the free listing cost 9.95 and you don't even get to put your web link up- now I do a few web sites and I don't see why it should cost 9.95 to copy and paste text into a web page which is what they are doing I mean lets be honest - it's something a 10 yar old could do in 2 seconds Why don't they say 9.95 for the rest of your life- and the answer is because FREE looks good on a web search engine |
