Did anybody notice? On this recent criss Angel special, he repeated, almost verbatim, an effect that Doug Henning performed on his last special with Anne Jillian and Bruce Jenner. I'm referring to the mirror effect. Just like Doug he pulled out the reflection of the money and the small bird.
I wonder if he realizes that he was repeating Doug's effect. Or if it was coincidence. Of course, Doug didn't do the cigar. I suspect though, that he obtained that cigar from someone who advertises on this Café and makes the best w***en cigars on the planet.

I think what is good is that Criss is bringing back a lot of tricks and either showing them in their original form or modifying them to increase the excitement in the show.
There are plenty of people that have not seen these tricks and it's good that they have not been forgotten. Don't look at magic as something that is propriatory. It really doesn't belong to anyone specific. If someone performs a feat of magic and then dies of old age.. it doesn't mean we have to let that magic trick die with 'em!!! |

I couldn't agree more.
I just thought it was kind of strange that he was doing the Henning routine, and wondered if it was coincidence, or if he had seen the routine as Doug performed it.

I don't think it is a coincidence - Criss Angel has some pretty learned and respected magic advisors on his show, so you can bet that they would say something. I would suspect that Criss Angel is doing it out of respect for Doug's work.

That could be true Marvello, but he sure does not respect magicians of today. I used to be a fan of Criss, but just recently got turned off after listening to this
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13052555 I know I posted that link in another forum, but I am just a little miffed at the guy. What gives him the right to openly bash us other magicians and to say that in a nutshell, we don't know what we are talking about. I especially like how he says that we get all of our information from printed books and material that has been around for hundreds of years while his is fresh and new. However, if it wasn't for the magic of old, he would not be where he is today. Sorry to rant, but I just can't stand the guy.

It seems that when some cosmetics, a different presentation or a name change it can be deemed new. Fresh, maybe? New? Not really.
It's the Blaine this or the Cris Angel that... blah, blah. I have nothing against these guys refreshing old effects but don't be claiming originality if it ain't. |

I can't believe the kiss ass host brought up his "voodoo" trick as an example of one that can't be explained! Does Criss manage to put down David Blaine in every interview he does?! I just posted this on another thread, but maybe it applies here too: Criss Angel is a total hack. I think the only people that are really into him, are into him because they think his goth/heavy metal schtick is cool. And I hate the argument fans make that his magic isn't meant to entertain magicians, it's meant to entertain laymen. Believe me, I know plenty of "laymen" who think this guy is a joke too. When his first DVD was released, I went out and bought it because I had never seen his show on A&E so I wanted to see what this guy was about and I'm always up for some good magic. I sat and watched it with my girlfriend one night, but first I put on my David Blaine Fearless DVD. My girlfriend (a laymen) had never heard of either Blaine or Angel, so I was interested in her take on these guys. She throroughly enjoyed Fearless and was pleasently entertained. Then I popped in my new Mindfreak DVD. After about 2 or 3 episodes she couldn't take it anymore. Most of the sh!t he pulled was so obviously fake to her. She could tell he was using stooges and camera editing and I didn't even say anything to her about it! I was a little more interested than she was just because I'm an amature magician, but I thought it was pretty pathetic for the most part. I think "Voodoo Doll" was the straw that broke the camels back for us. |

Rather, I felt that he was saying that he was also influenced by things of old (books, houdini, etc), but that he also has things that people don't know. And to some degree, he's right. I only have the knowledge of what I've read in books and seen on videos (100's of books and videos). If someone (Angel or anyone else) came up with some new method, I would have no idea how it's done. In fact, take an effect like pyro-perception. When I first saw that, I absolutely had no idea how it was done, so I had to buy it just to figure out the secret. I did the same thing with one of Angel's levitations. I was SURE that it was editing tricks, but I was wrong. So on some level, whether we like him or not, he's right. I'm judging him based on my limited knowledge of the books I've read, not new ideas he (or his team) may have come up with. Granted, he could learn some tact, but at the same time, he did refer to these people who are stuck in old books as a very small handful of people. Anyway, I'm not defending or bashing him. I'm just trying to look at it objectively. |
