A short while ago, I purchased one of Doug's really great ETMP effects and the workmanship was everything everyone said it was going to be. The effect as a standalone routine is very good and I tried it out on a few people with varying reactions (mostly good). The storyline that accompanies the effect is critical and I noticed that when I delivered a lesser quality presentation, some were able to recognise the method, also I was unable to repeat the effect (like most magic effects).
I am lucky enough to own a Labco Mental UFO II and I took the trouble of "rigging" the gory artifacts. A little later I went back to one of the people that said they had figured it out and asked if I could perform the routine again......refuting the theory they had formulated as to how it was done. This time I had a small wooden chest containing all the objects and the velvet bag that the ETMP comes in. I told the tribal themed story again but this time mentioned that I would turn away and one object was to be placed in the chest, one in the bag and one kept on the person of the sitter. I turned around and scanned the chest and bag (with the UFO - no touching),and was able to tell which object was in which container. By deduction I therefore knew which was being retained by the sitter. I did not reveal the locations yet!! I then removed a small bag with some dirt and bones in it (my sangoma bag!) explaining that the ancestors were angry as doubt had been cast upon their powers. I slowly sprinked some of the contents in front of the sitter, around the chest and onto the bag, mumbling some incantations under my breath. (I have to say that the look on their face was one of "this guy is nuts!!") Once I had finished I said, "The ancestors tell me that you have put the paw in the bag, stored the toe in the chest and have retained the ear - and they have a message for you - put this ear to good use and listen in future" I think the reaction was one of nervous confused laughter (and I wasn't asked to repeat the effect, go figure!) If the toe had been retained my last comment would have been "and they want you to toe the line as it is self defeeting (defeating). or the paw, "and they want you to paws (pause) for a moment and stop monkeying around." I highly recommend both Dougs stuff and the Mental UFO although the latter is a little pricey. Simon |

Glad you liked it Simon.
You said: "I noticed that when I delivered a lesser quality presentation, some were able to recognise the method..." As in all magic tricks of course...but the method is diabolical because it is so simple and straight foward. ALL my buyer reports (100%) are that it does fool folks and I think the more nonchelant you are in delivering the finish, the better. There will always be one in a large crowd who can figure things out no matter what the effect. I applaud your taking it to a more personal level and reworking the prediction, I just want others to know it is not necessary to add to the cost to have a killer effect. Just so it's known...there IS a way to repeat the effect...it's just usually pointless to do so...though it's nice to be able to do so in restaurant situation with adjoining tables. Thanks for the kind words.
