I'm interested in learning basic jumbo coin technique with a 3" gaff coin. Many instructional DVD's include the topic as a seeming afterthought, but I'm curious if there is something out there that addresses the topic specifically. I'm aware of "Dishonest Abe", although I don't need the prop or the routine...I'm actually seeking something that addresses the basics of accessing, introducting, transfering, manipulating, vanishing and ditching the oversized coins. I'll come up with my own applications and routines.
I'd also strongly prefer a DVD instructional product at this point--having found the written instruction on many pamphlets and books to be rather vague and counter-intuitive. Since I've looked for such a product on the internet, I'm beginning to think a product devoted to this subject does not exist...so if so, is there a DVD that handles it better than others? I don't really want knucklebusting, extreme technique, although I'm not afraid of skill work either--just want the effects to be realistic and effective. I love the effect the introduction of a jumbo coin has on laymen...and want to do it well. Your humble servant, BooRadley |

Jeff McBride has some DVDs with jumbo coin work as well as, Thimbles and balls. I beleive you'll find them on L&L site. Also there is a book I think by Kirk Gram on jumbo coin work, check Denny & lees site for this.

Here are another set of votes for Gary Kurtz and David Stone for Jumbo Coin manipulation in the context of an actual routine. Both heavily influenced my work.

Graham Kirk's Jumbo Coin Magic is a great resource.
I got it from Denny. 30 dollars I think. Worth every "half dollar". I prefer books to DVDs though...so that is my opinion.

I recommend Gary Kurtz videos/DVDs as a good starting point because you learn some really good basics with Jumbo Coins and some good utility moves. Cheers,

Ditto Bill....Gary Kurtz was some of the first coin work I saw and it was most magical! Today, I can best appreciate the pace and smoothness of his coin routines.

Jerry Mentzer has written two pamphlets on the use of jumbo coins, "Super Cents" and "Climax Coins." Click HERE for more info.
I've read the first book (which was pretty good), but not the second one. At $5 each, you can't go too far wrong. Good Luck! SETH

There are excellent stuffs on jumbo coin in Mark Munro's THINKING BIG - MAGIC WITH JUMBO COINS. There are 3 parts in this book :- Part 1 on technique, Part 2 on concealments and Part 3 on manipulation.
It's a great book. Every sleights Gary Kurtz did on his Flurious act can be found here. |

Don't forget the Secret Art of Coin Manipulation by Eric Evans. Not all jumbo work, but some very nice work with the Jumbo coins, plus it comes with two stainless steel discs to use.

Rather than sleights, might I suggest just working on one or two routines to introduce the coin? Once a jumbo is produced, I would suggest you look at the trick Sensory Control. It is similar to the Pulse Trick from Bobo, but because it uses a jumbo coin you are forced to use a very practical concealment of a jumbo.
It is on one of Ammars coin dvds and is a brief vanish and reappearance with the spectator giving you a lot of cover. Having said that, I don't like the way Ammar gets into t----- p---m, but it is a start which seems like what you are looking for. I get into the concealment with a jumbo retention vanish instead. I think one of the better artists with jumbo work was Kurtz, especially because the jumbo was used in an extended, logical context. And just don't stop at flurious; he has some other wonderful stuff with jumbos and silks. However, you said you don't want overly difficult material and, correctly performed, I think this is in that league. Watch his stuff and become inspired. |
