Hello,
I'm buying my unicycle next week and was wondering, what's the best way to learn? I have tried unicycling before. I rode along while holding onto a handrail to help me balance. What do you guys recommend? Thanks, James |

Hey - I've never learned to ride one yet, but I found this site that seems to have a lot of info (and instructions).

Hi
There is another thread somewhere in this forum where I give some hints. A handrail is a good idea, as is using another human being if you can. If you want to read up on it, there are a few good books. The Unicycling book by Jack Wiley is comprehensive, while the shorter How To Ride Your Unicycle by Charlie Dancey is cheaper, but covers the essentials. Once you get hooked, try progressing to a giraffe unicycle. Although taller, they're easier to ride. Cheers ML |

I have been told that if you are trying to learn alone, the best place to try it is in your hall, where you can put your hands on opposite walls at the same time for support/balance. That makes sense to me.

What worked best for me was having one person on each side, close enough to touch to help with balance when necessary. And in hindsite, I think wearing a bicycle helmet is a good idea. The wall thing will work, but it throws your posture off and it's harder to balance when you are leaning.
My friend learned to ride his by using ski poles, but that seemed too wild for me. But then again, I don't ski. The best way in my book is to recruit two friends who want to learn, and you can take turns being in the hot seat or being spotters. |
