Hello,
Can somebody give me a suggestion, what's the good brand of thumb tip? Do I need to have 2 kinds, the rubber and plastic for different kind of trick? Thanks |

Personnally, I only have a cheap plastic one. Large size... I can do plenty with it, doesn't cost much, answers all my needs for a TT. If you get the most common type available in magic stores, you will not go wrong. It is mainly a question of personnal taste and comfort with regards to plastic or rubber.

Go for a regular ol' Vernet TT. It won't let you down.
Also, if your just getting into TT's, look into getting 101 Tricks with a Thumb Tip as well. There's great information in there for a low price.

Hi DoomPenguin,
Which one is better, 101 Tricks or Encyclopedia of Thumb Tip? |

Good question. I only have 101 Tricks, which I bought with my Vernet TT awhile back. I've actually been looking into getting the Encyclopedia myself. I've heard from some Café member that it's a great resource for TT magic.
I reccomend getting 101 Tricks though. It has all the basics, and a bunch of tricks to look through. And, it's only $4. The Encyclopedia is $60, and even though it'll probably have more information in the long run, you should get 101 Tricks first.

$60 seems a bit much. I think 101 tricks book and a little thought will give you more than you need for quite awhile.

I just bought the "50 tricks With a Thumb Tip" booklet by Milbourne Christopher for $1.50 from Hank Lee's.
Only half as many tricks, but, hey, $1.50!

Gary Darwin also wrote some books about thumb tip magic. They are worth looking into. The 101 tricks and 50 tricks are really "bare bones" kind of books.

Bill is absolutely right. Darwin really takes it to a new level and I just recently ordered De'cova's dvd as it's supposed to take the possibilities to even greater levels. Can't wait to get it.
The good old Vernet's should be suitable for almost all applications, however, if you want to spend the money for a more realistic looking TT, the Fredi-up ones are decent, but, again, rarely needed and have their own shortcomings.

The Plastic are easier for slidings in and out. The Latex looks more real but are not as easy to handle. It is best to put a Latex over a Plastic one. It helps cover all four corners.

A question. My first thumb tip was a metal one. This makes sense with all the old cigarette and burnt napkins tricks that one still sees in the thumb tip books.
I know that cigarette magic is disappearing and I wouldn't do it anyway, but are lighted cigarette tricks done with these plastic and rubber tips? Are metal ones still made?

Hi CJ, I have used a plastic TT for the disapearing cigarette quite a few years ago, when you could find people smoking without difficulty... Never had a problem whith melting. If you "smooch" it out quickly, you should not have a problem either!
As for metal TT's, I personnaly have not seen any... Have a nice day! Louis Jutras |

Someone is still making them, because you can still get them from people who sell Adams products. However, you don't generally need them. If you want to vanish a lit cigarette, put some cotton in the tip. The cotton will smoke like crazy and will keep the TT from melting. Or you can line it with aluminum foil. If you are in England, use aluminium foil instead.

I've got 4 or 5 of the plastic Vernet's and they work great. Speaking of Darwin are the Darwin DVD's any good?

Sounds like I will have to check them out. I know so far the best trick I've ever seen or performed with a thumb tip that I know of has been Johnny Ace Palmer's 3 Magic Scarves. I had no idea it was thumbtip the first time I saw it.

I want Bill Palmer's "Wretched Red Rag" routine. How about publishing it, Bill?
