They re-designed their props or gimmicks and put their personality into the effect. Most if not all magic comes from what has gone previously in history. Now here is one more source to glean the talents, style and thinking of a professional. If you take an effect and put a 21 Century attitude and style to it, you may have something unique. Take his long salt pour, I bet it is nothing like Fred Kaps presentation! But yet without people like Benson that made it popular, Kaps would not have chose this effect, and so on..... |

[/quote] Yes and no. What I mean by that is this. Whan Fred Kaps performed the long pour salt trick in his silent act it was not exactly as he did when he used it in his talking act. Most of it was the same however. The Benson routine and Kaps routines are very closely related. The reason is Henk Vermayden had seen Roy Benson do the long pour at a convention here in the U.S. He then went home and taught Fred Kaps the routine as well as another routitne of Benson's. The Benson book is worth every dollar of the $150.00 price. |

Hi all,
Sometimes when I read too many positive reviews of a book or a movie, I can get a little turned off. It happens all the time in film and music, marketing overload, like I am being beat over the head to buy the product. There have been so many rave reviews for this book, I can see how this might happen for some. However.......... The positive reviews you are reading, including those on the MF site, are absolutely dead on accurate. I have been collecting magic books for over 30 years and this is clearly one of the best books I have ever read. The intensity of emotions in these reviews are genuine. One of the things that makes this book unique is that it will appeal to just about any magical interest. If you like magic history, you are going to get lost in the past, forgetting that you have places to go and things to do. It happened to me, the day after I received it, I was 20 minutes late picking my son up from school! If you are a performer or appreciate magic theory, you are in for a real treat. There is literally something for everyone. Though I recently received this book as a gift, (thank you Todd) there is absolutely no way I could possibly put a value on this book. The amount of work that went into Roy Benson by Starlight is immense. As with all Miracle Factory books, it is a very high quality and beautifully produced book. |

I had this book on my list 2 years ago and would have gladly paid the $150 then, but just couldn't afford it. Last year, I would have paid much more and called everywhere to try to find it without luck. Only recently was I able to find a copy at a steep price I won't mention. However, it's a collector's edition with a CD and signed...Nice. I perused just some of this book today (just got it) and have only read pages here and there. But, it is probably one of the best purchases I've made in awhile. I'm not saying that to drive the price up if you can even find it. Me...I love books on magic anyway and have collected a lot. I also love magic history and theory. This was right up my alley anyway.
If you can find this book used at all, I say buy it if you can afford it. If you don't like it, PM me and if I can, I might buy it from you. That's how much I like this book. Then I don't have to baby this one so much. : ) Can't wait to read it cover to cover! Just my two cents. |

I was looking for reviews on 'Cardini, the Suave Deceiver' and found many people referencing and recommending 'Benson by Starlight'. I just might look into getting this tome now after reading all the glowing reviews. Thanks everyone!
