I just got tthe STS trick and it works pretty good, but I have one question, how do you overcome the noise of the gimmick? As soon as I perform it the noise of the gimmick operating is pretty loud and obvious. Is there a way to slow down the gimmick, I think it's speed is what causes the noise.

You could make a lil' foam pouch for it easily enough. Also note that you'll be doing this in areas where people are not in a room alone so there will be back ground noise. Then you can say, during the action, in a loud voice "self tying shoe lace....BOO!" like they do on the demo.
As for the speed that is a tougher thing. I can't post here out of respect for the manufacturer but if you PM I'll tell you how I did it. Steve V |

I went with a more simple, manual system..... if that helps. It eliminated the noise and control issues.

I am just wondering what type of reactions you get with this? I saw the video and instantly knew exactly how it was done. To me it is just obvious. Even if my way is not the "real" way it was still my very first thought. Am I thinking like a magician or a layman? Every once in awhile an effect comes out that I will over look for the same reason.

Trust me, Johnny Mystic, this trick fools laymen, I get requests to do it every night at work...I've only done it twice and never again, I let the floks tell others.
But it does get a strong reaction and at times is hard to follow up with something else more impressive. I Am Johnny Mystic

My wife is a big skeptic and I did the trick for her last night. It's the 1st time I have done a trick for her and she responded with "What the hell? How did you do that?"

Precisely! Simple magic = effective magic... nobody else can tie their shoe laces without touching them, so it's amazing
Edit: And chichi... think of what would be running through the mind of a layman if you did this, or other effects that you think are simple to figure out... because to them, they are near impossible to figure out. Simple = good, even if it IS what you are thinking it is, it's worth it's weight in gold if it hits hard |

I know simple=good. I have been fooling people for years with the most simple tricks around. For some reason this just hits me as obvious. Well I will make my own and give it a shot. I am probably thinking like a darn magician again and that is why I asked.

Yeah, that's all it is as this effect does hit pretty hard.

...I mean... any update yet of the chi version?
I'd like to know what are you thinking about this "good-looking" effect... Do noise is too loud for a restaurant enviroment? Thank you. |

Why would it be loud? I just quickly threw my own version together, Chi Version 101, together to see what type of reactions I would get. I have only tested it on family right now, so take that for what it is worth, but so far so good. It is simple and that makes it nice. It has recieved a lot better reactions than I thought it would. I do think that one or two people looked at the same way I did. If you think about it for a few minutes you can explain it really easy and that is the only downside for me. Now if it can be done in shorts (the chi version cant) now you are talking!!!

I really think the key to that trick is to wait for somebody to point out that your shoes are untied. That makes the artifice less apparent.

Bingo.
If the effect happens as a result of someone pointing out your untied laces, it's like real magic and the reaction is strong. If you have to draw their attention to it, it can still be good, but far less so because it will have lost the spontaneity that gives this thing life.
It's all in the reflexes.

How else would you do this effect? "hey look my shoelace is untied check this out" That would never work.

If at work or at school, walking around with an untied shoelace can be embarassing...why?
Well, you could trip and look the fool, in front of important people this could be bad, whether young or old... However if you tripped in front of these people and drew undo attention to yourself you could then do what with said shoelace...*raised eyebrow's*...??? I Am Johnny Mystic
