Hi!
Last year, I played the Sorceress in "Once Upon a Matress". Just for fun effect, I used a finger flint flasher with a couple of my magic tricks. Since it was just an added effect, it wasn't a problem that it wasn't all that reliable. If it only went off half the time, no biggie. But I'm now playing the Wicked Witch in the "Wizard of Oz". When I need to shoot fire, it absolutely has to go off every time. What would be the best device to use? Since it's amateur theater, there's not much budget, so I don't know if they'll be able to spring for something very expensive. Perhaps there's even something that could be rented for less dough? Or, barring that, does anyone have any tips to make the finger flint flasher more reliable? Thanks! Jo |

An electronic flash gun is probably your best bet. They're around $30 for a single shot gun and $50 for a double shot. You need flash paper and flash cotton as well.

Thanks! So, even though it still uses flash paper/cotton, it's more reliable?

Try hacking one of those wind up toys or guns with the flashing sparking innards if going on the cheap, for more distance in the sparks, there is a palm held spark flasher, and of course I cannot remember what it is called, I think Steven's magic carried them a number of years back.

A spark ejector? I thought about that possibility. Thanks! Jo |

That sounds like an excellent inexpensive gadget. Do you think the sparks are impressive enough for the Witch? OH! I could have the Flasher in one hand and the Funken Ring in the other for a backup!
Thanks! Jo |

Th funken ring is pretty visible, though it will all depend on the lighting for your production, if dim or to the blue side, it should do okay. I would google it up, see who has the inexpensive one- I really thought I did see one for about 5, maybe 10 at the most, and play with it. I will be digging mine out and tinkering a bit, as I saw a page for fixing it when sprung, something about put the key in and gently wiggle it while pressing the button until it springs free again! You will likely wear the flint a bit when you first get it playing with it, so be sure you know how to change it out, and have a fresh one for your show!

If you want to shoot balls of fire I would go for Rick Haslett products.
I got a 6 shooter some time ago, and I can shoot 6 balls of flame during parts of my act without reloading. the ignition system is surefire, no flints. |

The only other thing to maybe consider, the Funken will likely NOT cause issue with your local fire marshall, while the flash paper gun might.
Just a thought to make sure you get the clearance! k
