First of all, welcome to the forums! I hope you find stimulating discussion to make your travels through magic thought-provoking and enjoyable!
Second, the forums are not really used to discuss solutions to tricks. But I don't think anyone will mind my pointing you in the right direction on this one. Take a look through the "Mind Bender" forums for discussions of problems based on similar principles: Magical Equations or Puzzle Me this... in particular. Play around with a small set numbers, e.g. 3 two-digit numbers from the range 10-19 , 3 two-digit numbers from the range 20-29 and 3 two-digit numbers from the range 30-39. The solution should then become apparent. And to all those more experienced than I, i.e. the senior members and moderators: if I have overstepped the bounds regarding exposure... ![]() |

I am embarrassed to say it baffled me much longer than it should have. The behavior of those small sets of numbers is only half of the answer here. If you think about it, there's a relatively easy way to discover the other half. Good luck!

I would like to add that if you can figure this out, it can be applied
to other forms of magic. For instance this method is well known in cards.

A few years ago I bought a trick by Oliver Clark called "100 Names".
These tricks seem similar. 100 Names always got great reactions. |

As in all these number tricks, the secret ingredient is 9.

Off the point, the number nine is also applicable in accounting. If you are doing a trial balace for instance and the two amounts do not match up and the difference between them is 9 or 18 etc., then you most probably reversed 2 numbers ie., you wrote 132 instead of 123 or 321.

About the original post - this is a better version for my money as the symbol changes each time.
http://www.magictricks.co.uk/mindreader/MagicTricksMR Didn't take me long to figure out as I remembered having a version of it in a Christmas cracker as a kid. ENJOY

There's no reason to be embaressed if you don´t get this first, second or third time. After that you should be worried about your mathskills.
![]() I saw this first time about 18 years ago with symbolcards.

Google "Casting out nines" for some links to the mathematical principle at work here.
This principle is at work on a number of the internet tricks you find. Kevin |

Robert, check your PM's. I hope that will help clarify this mathematical force. I have not explained the many other effects that are possible using the same principle, perhaps it will amuse you to try and apply it to card tricks on your own.

The people in the know seem to be very blasé about this effect. I thick it's great, I showed it to a couple of lay persons and they were blown away and are still begging for the explaination.

Just don't show it to the same people too often.
