This has been unavailable for far too long. Now it's back in "print" and I, for one, am grateful.
There are several books and courses available to help kick-start your career. There are a few which will help you move your career to "the next level." This helps in both areas - and it could improve your career even if you *don't* work in restaurants. OK, I'll admit it. Most of this can be found by a careful reading of Jim's articles in the two huge volumes which reprint the first ten years of <i>the Magic Menu</i>. And if you own those two volumes (and/or the Final Four issues which were reprinted in a smaller volume) you probably don't *need* this book. It is really, really great to have all this in one place, in one concise package. Jim took the time to make things a little more clear, a lot more interesting, and a whole lot more to the point. Jim shows you just what the job (and it is a job) of a restaurant magician IS, how to locate and determine where you want to work, how to encourage the manager to want your work, and how to GET the job. It is cliche to say this, but Part Three (Maintaining Your Position) really *is* worth more than the cost of the book. There is, wonderfully, an appendix which gives a shining example of a promotion package -- including letters of recommendation from previous or current venues. Well yeah - this too is worth the price of admission. Let's put it this way. There is one phone script in this book, which Jim recommends you individualize. Whenever I have done so - EVERY time I've done so - I've gotten an audition, and a job. And that's only one small portion of this book. It's been fifteen years since this was published. It remains the best "how to" manual for restaurant magicians. And if you've never considered the value of restaurant magic - maybe this book will change your mind.
