Hi people
I had some contacts with a Busker from the Café, I've seen his show, he gave me lots of tips, I read as much as I could here, I have enough idea and props to build an escapology show, but I am scared to start I live in Brussels, and it seems like a pain in the ... back to busk there, so this little association named l'espace speculoos ( http://www.espacespeculoos.be ) are doing something great, you can ask them (for free) for the "es-pass" wich gives you the right to perform in 4 different locations in Brussels, pass the hat and an insurance. This is a very good initiative but this scares me even more, I'm afraid people comming to these places would want to see something really good, not a beginner. Worst thing is ... I know your answer : go out there and perform ! |

Ask Mario when his next busking course is. He does a straitjacket and chains escape himself. With a group of like-minded enthusiasts, you will get help and advice. The finish of course will be a street show in Cardiff along with your course colleagues.

That's it guy. And I sympathise (sp). I've only been out once this summer for the first time in over 20 years! I'm have serious trouble practicing, rehersing or even simply gluing some of the props together! (Those Slydini T&R papers don't make themselves you know!) So I know where you're coming from.
Just try to go out and have some fun! That's the only advice I can think of! (And I wish I could follow it myself!)

Look at the course like this: you need expertise. Cardiff is a two hour flight from Belgium. It's a four or five hour train ride. Whatever you pay to take the course you will make up in your hat in a few days.
As we say in the States, do the math. If your job is a problem, suddenly you have a case of the flu.

I would love to go busking in the Grand Plaza in Brussels, Don't tell it's not big enough for magicians there?
It's never to late to have a happy childhold!

Xargos: just go out there and perform! hehe
I wouldn't worry about being a beginner, just don't act like a pro if you are not - people can smell a phoney a mile away. If you don't act like your the greatest magician in the world, people won't expect you to be the greatest magician in the world. Just go out there with the attitude that your going to have fun, and people will pick up on that and will want to have fun with you. JoeJoe

I think the hardest part will be to go there, then once I start acting crazy it'll be all right
I scheduled my next (and first) show for next week (as soon as my assistant comes back from france). I planned those escapes : -Comedy thumbcuffs : you know the usual thing, but I need to milk the idea a bit more to make it last a bit longer -A full view bag escape : I am chained and padlocked (using 4 padlocks) by a member of the audience as they wish (chains around my neck is not forbidden at all) then I am padlocked in a big bag using a combination padlock on the outside of the bag sight unseen ! and last effect : -handcuffed in my back, and then a plastic bag is taped over my face suffocating me slowly. Any thoughts about this ? Something wrong ? I think this should last around 30 minutes, I hope people will like it, escapology is really UNKNOWN in Belgium, this could be very good ... or very bad, but I am optimistic I think the hardest bit for me will be to wait for a decent crowd to gather and not rush to perform |

I think that your program is to long. I understand why you have to be placed in the bag for the middle escape but I would consider the fact that you are new to street work and there's a chance that you'll lose your audience while your gone in the bag. Thumb cuffs sounds like a good idea for the draw - if that is the way you will play them. I recomend starting of with a very short show and gradually increase the length of it as you grow into the role.

Ark = my bag routine is the one I worked on the most and the one I spent the most money on, I'm not ready to drop it , I am pretty sure I can keep the crowd while in the bag, I have my ideas, I planned the dramatic progression

The best School you can have is out there doing it.
You look like some one with lots ability so I suggest that you get on with it. Being scared is a good thing it will carry you through your show. You are more than wellcomed to do the cause, you will learn lots of things that will take seasons to learn. This will pay you back in your hat both short and long term. If you like to talk just contact me through my web-site. http://www.mariomorris.co.uk Mario |

I would also recomend NOT doing any kind of escape where you are out of veiw and YOU can't see the people around you, trust only yourself my lad! Now if you have an assistant/bodyguard with you then you should be al set!

Xargos: Hit the streets then! Test it and see what happnes. I have performed with a post bag on the streets and that's the reason I don't recomend it. But perhaps it feels much better for you. Go ahead, break a leg!

I'm nowhere near a seasoned street performer. But I've learned this much:
-Standing silently doing marathon tricks like the linking rings or floating card...brings stares and nothing else. Crowds will not gather in front of you. -Make sure ya know about performers permits and the laws or risk a ticket. -I'm in Chicago, and I've learned to cater to the short attention span of the American tourist. One I get a crowd of about 10-15 I start my show. It lasts 7 minutes with, in my opinion, not a second of dead air. Any longer, those in the back usually start walking away. -Yes, allude to money during your act, several times. -Invite the kids to sit up front. That'll keep the parents there, and force them to come up front to get their kids at the end. Any other tiny pieces of advice some vets could throw down would be greatly appreciated. I'm planning on making this my full time job outside of school. I'm just that lazy. |
