Yes, I have a Blue and Gold Macaw .. believe it or not. I've had her since she was only a few weeks old .. now she's almost ten. I'm no bird expert .. but I do take good care of her and she's very healthy. The thing is, lately she's been screaming at the top of her lungs for no apparent reason. There's nothing outside, nothing in the sky .. just her screaming over nothing. I know they do that for attention and so on .. and it could even be a mating call or something like that.
Anyone else out there know what's the deal ?? Steve |

You have an amazing animal! So let's look at some possibilities...Has she been traumatized in some way? New housekeeper with vacuum? Pet-sitter. Hidden cats or snakes in the bushes outside the window? New girlfriend in your life?
Parrots are smarter than some people and very sensitive. Macaws can even blush! I would surely take her to an avian vet for a check-up. She is very young and has many years to live. The average lifespan is about 50 - 60, not the 100 years that some believe. A 50 year old macaw is quite old. The blue and gold macaw reaches sexual maturity between three and six years old, so she has already passed that point. She may show more aggression during molting season, so maybe she has a tough molt coming up. She is bonded to you, alone, so if you have been gone or on tour this could be the reason. Your avian vet can probably give you a firm reason for the screaming. She/he can check your bird for worms, fleas or microscopic mites that are driving her crazy and making her scream. Your vet can check to see if her feet hurt or if her diet is lacking in B vitamins or minerals. Your vet can tell if she is blocked or constipated or has a hidden illness. Make sure you use an avian vet, because regular vets lack expertise in birds. You certainly don't want 40-50 more years of screaming. Nip that in the bud and ask the vet for some help with your beautiful buddy. Steve, please let us know how she is doing and what the vet suggests.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Thanks for your reply .. I'm well aware of any changes .. especially the vacuum! That's always a challenge because I did have to get a new one .. and she doesn't like it.
The screaming can happen at anytime .. with no one near. If her windows are open .. yes, the whole neighborhood hears her. She's pretty good when I'm away .. only short trips right now. Hey Dave .. what's up?? How's your gig going?? Steve |

Hi Steve,
My umbrella cockatoo had a FIT when I put a new coffee table in the room. After about a week I thought that maybe he didn't like it... so I moved it and he shut up... Also, I hung a black curtain... same thing... got rid of it and he got quiet again. Birds are birds though, and they scream because it's fun, and it's what they do. lol... obviously excessive screaming can and probably should be avoided. We have 3 macaws here in Saipan, and we keep them at the Hyatt... You can hear them from about a mile away... and it's not in excess, it's just their normal screaming. Maybe you have been accidentally reinforcing the screaming without realizing it? Maybe your reaction (or lack of reaction) is reinforcing it? Sometimes leaving the room helps, sometimes it makes it worse... depends on what the bird wants. I've found that they're usually trying to tell you something. I would definitely take him to the vet for a check up just to be safe. That was something that I ran into a lot with my umbrella... sometimes he'd scream because he didn't feel well. Anyway, the gig's going well! 16 shows down, 2,484 to go! It's a great gig, and I'm loving it! How are you? Keeping busy? Gotta run. Dave

I also wanted to add a link that suggests some possible environmental hazards that might be influencing your bird's behavior. I know there are serious problems for parrots with fumes of any kind, especially: Pesticides (has your landlord sprayed for insects?), Round-up weed killer, various aerosols, carpet freshener, scented candles, Febreeze fabric spray, new carpet, Teflon pans, and plug-in air fresheners just to name a few.
Lava rock bird toys and some mineral blocks can cause intestinal blockage. Watch out for items near her cage that she can reach and eat like plastic ballpoint pens that can shatter and be swallowed. The insight from Dave regarding his umbrella cockatoo and the coffee table was fantastic! Look for changes in your buddy's environment. Here is a great link: http://www.parrotparrot.com/birdhealth/alerts.htm

The coffee table story reminded me of when I tried to replace a chair in her room. It's kind of a jungle theme so I bought a leopard print chair. You can guess .. she didn't like that at all. I still have the worn out chair in her room and the spotted chair is collecting dust in the basement. So much for the jungle theme ..
Steve Oh Dave .. summer here is a bit slow. The park I work at during the summer didn't open this summer .. yikes! It was too late in the season to book any other work .. so I'm just sliding by right now .. but I'll survive. |

Hi Dave,
Just wanted to let you know that your video series is great. Every bird owner should have these. ABout the only times Merlin gets wound up is when I'm talking to him getting him wound up or when he has to go back in his cage against his wishes, then he lets me know he is not a happy camper. Other than that he's fairly quiet, he does get a lot of one on one time with me. I take him almost everywhere I go in the new Aviator harness, which is another great item, no buckles. He totally behaves in the Jeep everywhere we go. Take Care Tell Chet I said Hi. Bill & Merlin |
