Are sponges a smart trick to do on the street, they pack small but how do you stop them from blowing away.

Hollow them out and put rocks in them?
Don't let go of them? Only use them on still days? Don't tell me...I'll get it. |

I wondered this myself. I like sponge balls! I just used a car sponge to make up my own because I didn't like the flimsy red ones any longer!

Sponge balls are probably one of the most powerful tricks and a lot of people don't give them enough credit, thinking they are only for kids but from my experience adults love them just as much if not more. so many posibilitys, so I was thinking why not add it to the street.

Good quesiton. I saw Darryl do a two ball routine that looked like it would be great for outside and you may be able to do it with larger balls...just a thought

I do sponges on the street all the time. It is better when it's not windy. But if it is windy, I place my wand down wind of them to hold them in place when they're on the table. When it's really windy, I get one person per sponge to lightly press on them with one finger to hold them in place. The advantage to the latter is you are involving more people directly.

You can put them halfway under a deck of cards, put them in your sleeve but sticking out, in a vest pocket so they are still visible. some busker tables are made with an extra piece of fabric that goes accross that you can lift up and slide something underneath like a card or a spongeball or whatever.

Think outside the box of normal sponge use... David Ginn had a routine in one of his early books (it may have been Colorful Magic, or one of the Strictly Visuals) that kept the sponges either in your hand or in a hat/box the whole time. It used large sponges and was more of a manipulation thing than the usual "I have one, you have one, you have two." It could be done to music.
My assistant years ago used to perform this in our show with a kicker ball hidden in her mouth for a finish. The only time that trick was a bad idea was during the early years. We were working a retirement home and before she had to walk out in front of the curtain, a gentleman in the front started passing gas for what seemed like 10 minutes. She was dying with only one air passage open and I was on the floor backstage laughing my ass off. ~michael

I just have a clear tupperware container, and I place them in there when not in use. It works great!
And HatTrix, I agree with you 100%. These are soo overlooked. People think just because it is easy, that everyone knows how it is done. Well, I get GREAT reactions with them, and my routine has a lot of involvement, and funny lines, and is great for any situation. |

Cory,
glad the clear tupperware is working... I still remeber the look on your face the first time at the "Cove" when you had to chase a sponge ball. I use a strap for those and cards outside. There is nothing like saying "Quick follow me for six blocks while we chase cards and try toget a dramatic finish to this trick..." LOL
