It would be much better not to judge before facts are clarified over any doubt.

Ok, apparently there is now more to it. Lip reading specialist in the UK is saying there's the word terrorist before wh***.
At the time of the incident, I thought it was madness. I must say that I now fully understand his anger. |

Quote: That's a valid point, and I suppose I did a poor job of making my point. What I was getting at is that the Italian team should have a sick feeling about what their player did to get Zidane out of the game. And as always, I emphasize that Zidane's actions were far worse, and were in no way justified. When faced with that kind of talk, the appropriate response is to score the winning goal, not to lash out with violence. Zidane elected to to forego the former in favour of the latter, and disgraced himself in the process.
Santa, If it turned out that Materazzi said something objectionable please note that Materazzi is not "a team", he's just "one" player. I can't accept a line as "resorting to ethnic slurs to goad etc" referred to a whole team; this sounds quite offensive. Honestly, I'd have to consider myself an unbiased observer, because I had no rooting interest in the game. So while someone here is calling people "whiners" -- well, I haven't lost anything, so I have nothing to whine about as far as the results go. The only thing I've lost is respect for Zidane, and what little respect I had for Materazzi. I object to either player being portrayed as an innocent victim. And, to me, the final game of the 2006 World Cup is forever tainted, which is a pity. The whole episode just illustrates one of the negatives of international football. I'm a Premier League fan, and in the Premier League you see less of the cheap shots, the diving, the overall ugliness that rears its head in other leagues. It certainly happens in the Premier League (see Cantona, Eric), but it's tolerated less. That's one of the reasons Materazzi didn't fare well in Everton -- he was constantly getting yellow and red cards. I'm also dismayed that this episode has become such a focus of media attention. I hope Zidane, when he speaks about it, simply says "What he said is between him and myself, and will remain so. His words deeply offended me, however there was no justification for my actions, and I apologise to <insert lengthy list here>." I believe that that is the only appropriate statement for him to make. I see that the thread has become more heated overnight ... another shame. I hope that we can cool down a bit and get our heads. After all, we're going to need to save our energy for the discussions that will occur when Phil Mickelson puts a sleeper hold on Tiger Woods at the Open Championship next week. Zidane makes apology for headbutt Zinedine Zidane has apologised for the headbutt on Italy's Marco Materazzi which earned him a red card in Sunday's World Cup final penalty shoot-out loss. But the France legend did not reveal what Materazzi said, only confirming that it was "very personal" and concerned his mother and his sister. In a French TV interview, Zidane, 34, said: "I want to ask for forgiveness from all the children who watched that. "There was no excuse for it. I want to be open and honest about it." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football......9342.stm

A bit off topic, but... here's the big question: why is the world cup still being decided on penalty kicks??? go to sudden death overtime or something. We need a winner from more than penalty kicks.

Mike, they did go to overtime. It is most often called "extra time". They played an extra 30 minutes (which is one-third the length of the entire game).
Only after extra time to they go to penalty kicks.

Yeah, there was extra time. Unfortunately they eliminated the Golden Goal rule a few years ago, so it wasn't sudden death. I still don't understand this, and I don't know who was ever complaining about the Golden Goal. Not that it would have made a difference in this match, of course, since neither team scored ... But wouldn't it have been annoying if a team scored in extra time, then the other team tied it and we went to kicks?
Having said that, I don't mind kicks, as long as they come after a scoreless extra time. But I do wish they'd go back to the old system where the goalkeeper could be wherever he wanted, the kicker started from further back and could run with the ball, and had to shoot within a certain time limit (I think it was five seconds). There was more skill involved. The current system is mostly guesswork. I also think the should go back to enforcing the "no stutter step" rule on penalty kicks -- they give the kicker an unfair advantage. (And I'd say that even if Portugal hadn't used the stutter step on three kicks en route to knocking off England.) |

I prefer the Silver Goal myself... if in extra time a side takes the lead the other team has until the end of each fifteen minute period to at least equalise otherwise they lose.

I hate to see it come down to penalty kicks which do seem like guesswork on the part of the goalie. He dosen't stand a very good chance. Ending it that way would be like playing the NBA finals to a seventh game, then overtime, and finally deciding the thing with a free throw shooting contest. I say let it be decided with both teams on the field of play, playing the game the way it's supposed to be played.

Make sure you think this all the way through and compare apples to apples.
First, most of the players play all 120 minuts of the game, only three subs per game. So comparing that to NBA, Shaq cant even play 40 minutes. There are unlimited subs. Next, goals are a precious few. So what happens after say 180 minutes, that's three full hours, of no scoring? In the NBA there is a score almost every 30 seconds on average. So to make apples to apples, you would need to say the team must win by say, 30 points, if not they just keep playing until so. So now players are literally just walking, of course Ronaldo already was...LOL. I admit I don't know what the answer is. There were talks of extending corners kicks awarded to balls that cross within 3 yards of the corner flag. Maybe we loosen the offside rule to allow a half step is still onside. Either way, doesn't look like an easy answer.

Ok. Take the NFL. They don't score nearly as often as in the NBA. Would you have the Superbowl decided by a field goal kicking contest? Of course not. How about a Home Run derby to decide the World Series after say 15 innings. I don't think so.
My point is, play the game until someone wins. Don't play until a predetermined time and then if the score is tied, play a different game. The kicks in Soccer are a completely different game from what is played up until that point.

Ok, I am with you on that. However you did gloss over the fact that there are only three subs. Every sport you have named thus far, has unlimited subs. So my question is what do you do after three hours of non stop play when the guys are literally just walking. Is that the same game? I don't think so.

It's kind of like baseball when a game goes 16 innings and the team is out of pitchers and they have the center fielder on the mound with a noodle arm. You play the game. That's why there was such an uproar when they called that All Star game a tie a few years back. People went nuts because that is not the way a game is supposed to be decided. They even changed the format of the games to try to aviod anything like that happening again.
My feeling for soccer is play until everyone drops if that's the case. If everyone except one person faints dead away on the field...So be it. If there is only one guy left who has the energy to take the ball down and score...I'm fine with that as well. When it comes to crunch time you seperate the men from the boys. If one team is too tuckered out to play anymore. Well, they can just give up the game winner and go home.

To address the issue of the three sub limit -- allowing further subs in extra time eliminates that problem.
I agree that kicks are a bad way to end the game, but at the same time soccer matches are more likely to go on for hour upon hour than a football or baseball game. When two soccer teams are playing tight defence, it's nearly impossible to score. That's why we see so few goals scored in extra time, and so many matches going to kicks. I mean, I'm tempted to say "let them play until there's a winner" ... but even as a devoted fan, I'm not sure I'd want to watch seven hour matches. Frankly, it's not a debate I can take a strong stance on either way ... only that there are no truly good options. You could get radical --- do what the NHL does. When a game goes into extra time, both teams play with fewer men. Maybe go down to 7 men per side. Or get rid of the goalkeepers. Even better ... if the match ends and there is no winner, the judges should award points based on artistic merit. Another possibility is opening up the phone lines at the end of the match and letting the viewing audience decide. |

LOL those are some fine ideas Santa!!
Actually Baseball games do go on for hours. Four hours is not unheard of. In 2005 a playoff game between Houston and Atlanta went 5 hours 50 minutes.(18 innings) That game edged out the second longest post season game by only 1 minute. Although, I grant you, baseball is not nearly as strenous. Except for the pitchers who can only throw hard for so long. Like you Santa, I don't have very strong feelings about it. I just go by my gut. In these cases my gut always says... Play the game, finish the game. Even if it basically becomes a war of attrition.
