Just read through this thread and for what its worth a few comments. People who can't deliver hurt the business if they are magicians, comedy magicians, comedians whatever. Whenever I have worked with comics they are come in with an attitude about prop acts. More often than not these same guys didn't get a fraction of the laughs I would get.

It's really quite simple.
If you consistently get laughs (in all the right places and at the right times)when you perform, then you are a comedian. If you consistently evoke a sense of wonder and amazement when you perform magic tricks, then you are a magician. If you consistently achieve both, then you are a comedy magician.

I take the approach that I should only bill myself as any particular thing if I am employable at that skill
as a stand alone talent. While I dance in my show, no venue on this planet is going to employ me to dance - so dance is never mentioned. Why raise expectations only to disappoint and lose future bookings? Destiny |

The way it works is like this:
Most of the so called “Comedy Magician’s” that are not funny don’t get it, because they lack the self awareness to understand that simple point. And every time one of them finally quits the business because he can not get any more bookings there is another one ready to take his place. The unfunny comedy magician is not going away. I just got off the cruise ships for a little break. I was talking with the entertainment director who by the way hates magicians for many reasons, was telling me about a comedy magician that was on the ship a while back. He was getting so few laughs in the show it was painful to watch. After the show he came to the CD with a big smile on his and talked about how he had just killed. What a great show! Everyone was stunned. He bombed like warm horse turd on shag carpeting but he never got it. Most magicians only understand tricks. They no nothing of lighting, sound, blocking, theatrics, comedic timing, dramatic pause, or even how to treat their audience. Yellow Jacket |

"Most of the so called “Comedy Magician’s” that are not funny don’t get it" But why single out comedy magicians most of anything magicians, clowns, comics, dancers, teachers etc. don't get. Its this way in any field you like think of how bad the average is and consider that half are worse.

Here is my suggestion: If you get laughs you're funny and if you don't you aren't. There's a lot of logic in this post. It's the kind of thought process that many comedy-magicians should dwell on at length, but won't. Their logic will be that it doesn't apply to them because that's not the reason the crowd wasn't laughing last night. They'll continue to believe they didn't get laughs because the room was too hot, and the staff was to slow getting the drinks to the tables. |

Many of the "big name" comedy magicians are not that funny! They are only funny to other magicians at a magic convention. Many times magicians laugh at them not because they are really funny, but because they are told these guys are supposed to be funny in those magic magazine rags. Most "Magic Castle" type comedy magicians couldn't "punch thier way out of a comedy bag" if they were working a real comedy club, like the Improv, Zanies, the Ice House, etc. for a lay audience. Plus most of the "big name" comedy magicians are hacks too, they just copied a bunch of old jokes and act like they have some rights to them now.

I used to keep track but can't find my notes... but NOBODY... NO... BODY... got more laughs per minute than CARL BALLANTINE.
Terry Seabrooke, a very funny man that does excellent magic just finished a lecture on comedy and magic... and a young fellow came up to ask, "How do I become funny?" Seabrooke replied, "Are you funny now?" He said, "No." To which Terry replied, "I doubt then if you will be funny. You can't learn it. You are funny or your are not."

I don't think Seabrooke is funny in the least. Maybe a Brit finds him funny ... I've never understood that type of humor, so I can't comment. But barking at an invisible dog is just plain stupid. But, if you want to believe what the magic magazines tell you ...
The bottom line is, nobody here (including me) has the right to say who is or is not funny. The audience is the only judge ... and maybe the guy who signs your check. Other than that, who cares? |

When I am in the audience I darn well have the right to say who is and is not funny. No doubt.

Magicians will laugh at things that I can't even get a fun loving lay person to so much as crack a grin at...cause they simply don't get the humor behind the jokes or props. After comming to understand this is when I formed the different acts...one for magicians and the other for "Real World" bookings. After reflecting on the two different styles I realize that my "magicians act" is so much more rediculious because most of the magic and comedy is satirical towards magicians and magic...it focuses more on laughter than anything (the last thing I care about is stumping magicians with tricks), while as my normal show can still amaze and make a lay audience laugh! I'll be the first to admit...I use some of the old jokes...but then again, most of the material in the show is my own material...but in the long run, I don't think it really matters when it comes down to old or new jokes as long as people are laughing...after all... that is what matters most! People who use the same jokes as everyone else will be the main ones affected by their choice to do so. Without any originality, they are stuck in someone elses shadow and will more than likely be doing only small town gigs for the rest of their life. Once you become different and establish yourself as something else apart from the rest of the guys who always open with "Why did the chicken cross the road?" the fame and expansion of your act will begin and you will be open to broader opportunities simply because you have something "Fresh" to offer! |

I believe whether you advertise yourself as a comedy magician, a mentalist, or an illusionist that first and foremost you are an entertainer. If your audience doesn't enjoy your show... you will have a hard time getting bookings.
It amazes me how some people think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread and they are not funny or very magical. Look at all the people that try out for American Idol and most of them stink. Ask your audience what they like and don't like and whether they think you are funny if that's what your'e trying to do. Anyone can do a magic trick, but not everyone is a good entertainer. |

In college theater we had this one guy who tried so hard to be an actor. He studied, practiced and ran his lines with other actors far more than anyone else. He never became any better. Not everyone can be taught to become a great or even good entertainer. Everyone has his and her talents in this life but not everyone can be everything. Just because you may want to be a "comedy magician" doesn't mean you can become one. If no one laughs at anything you say in every day life then I suggest you black out the "comedy" portion on your comedy magician business card.
You are either funny or you are not. Buying the latest comedy magic prop won't help it. Find what you are really good at and focus on it. It sounds too simple, that's why so many don't do it. Tony Brent Outta Control Magic Show Orlando |

After reading my own post allow me to add to it: You can no doubt train and become a better and funnier perfomer. However, there must be "bent" toward humor. An understanding of what comedy is and a sense of comic timing that really can't be taught; you either are born with it or not.
