Hello All,
I thought I'd pop this up here to get some comments of improvement. This is a piece of my that I will be performing in the first week of August at The Magic Castle, and am looking for some advice to improve. Most of it is original to me, with a few things here and there from other magicians. At the end there's a little flash with a coin, but the severe angles of the camera are unforgiving and I couldn't avoid flashing. This will not be the case in the Close-Up Gallery. Please excuse the backdrop, my attire and the poor video quality. I'd like to thank Chris Korn, Shoot Ogawa, Rick Merrill, and Aaron Rabkin for routines and inspiration that are included. Anyway, I'll let you watch and I hope you enjoy. The link is in my signature (New York, New York) Thanks Ben |

Nice job! I like how many of the moves were in sync with the music. Also, in 2:43-2:46 of the clip, it did not look like you actually put the mini wand into the coat pocket. However, I'm sure it would look different in person.

Excellent work. Three suggestions.
1) use a slightly tilted table top so everyone can see the coins -- if you are planning to do this for a seated audience that is not right on top of things. 2) clean up the wand move Steven pointed out 3) if you could produce those last two wands using some other method, it would look much more magical. But...it is really excellent!!!!! :applause:

Congratulations. To be honest, I'm a little bit jealous of your talent. I am looking forward to see you perform in upcoming conventions sometimes in the futur.

Beautiful. I REALLY love close-up that is choreographed to music, not just with music as a background.

Thank You Frank.
I was advised that perhaps a Kennedy Hummingbird Reel to produce the wands out of my breast pocket at the end with both hands showing might be more magical. What do you guys think? Thanks, Ben |

That would definitely be better. I'll PM you with a couple of other options.

Ben, good correlation betweent the wands and the coins. Nicely paced. The only suggestion I'd make, and this is srictly a personal opinion, is to try not to mouth the words of the background music. The music is the right tempo for the act and actually highlights it but it doesn't need the lip sync.

Now I am not saying he needs more character, as you can see he is VERY personable. But anything you can do to "relate" with your audience is good. Over 50% of the crowd is signing the song in their heads, its a very popular song. I think when he looks at his audience, raises his brow, and mouthes (mouthes???) a few of the words it gives it a little something. What do yuo guys think?? I can see both sides of this though.......... |

Overall it was very nice. I didn't mind the lip synching of a few words of the song.
Only thing I can say--and don't take this wrong--I think the very end with the wand in the mouth looked just a little, um, goofy. . . in relation to the rest of the routine.

Hi CJ,
I was thinking the same. I like it for a few reasons though. 1. At the beginning I produce the wand in the same formation. 2. Its a nice display of all three. 3. My hands are open for a nice applause cue. Seemed like the best option - any words of advice? Thanks, Ben |

Maybe if the mouth wand were held more debonairly, like a cigarette holder or an expensive cigar instead of like a dog bone?
You're three reasons for using it are valid. Somehow at the beginning with the smaller wands it looks better than at the end.

Hey Ben,
Liked the routine but I think using a song that popular may distract rather than add to the overall routine ... many people will silently (we hope ) be singing along and they may miss some of the magic ... also the song is older than you are!! I do a coin routine to music but have no words in the tune ... Other thoughts ... I'd finish with 3 Jumbo Coins and then 3 wands ... keeps the symmetry from the first half intact ... I have an idea for producing the other two, but I'm sure you can come up with your own method ... also more misdirection on the Jumbo Coin steal is needed I think ... How about a false ending ... bow and start to leave and then come back and produce the big items? You use the "3" hand gesture several times early on and then desert it ... Just my thoughts ... overall very nicely done ... Glad to have a chance to see you in action ... break a leg at the Castle ... |
