Many sideshow acts look more dangerous than they are (not to downplay the danger, though).
Fire eating is very, very dangerous. People are badly burned and die when they make mistakes. For example when doing a human volcano (where a "volcano" of fire comes out of your mouth) there are at least two critical things to know. Miss one and your lungs are gone, and you soon after. Miss the other and you enjoy the rest of life with a burned face. I know a guy who made that mistake...we call him Freddie (after Freddie Kruger of the movie series, he looks like that now). Giving a go to fire eating is a very, very bad idea. If you don't learn personally from someone you will be injured or killed...this is no exaggeration. This is one thing you must get personal training in...a book or video just won't do it. There are many fire eaters...find one and learn it right or burn. |

I live in West Virginia and there's not a lot of people here that do much of anything fun besides party. However I did see a guy eat fire at a juggling fest in Flordia he gave me the run down on how to make some torches and tips on actually eating it but I couldn't recall the oil he said to use

He gave you a run down, knowing that he wouldn't run into you again? Oh boy! THAT's responsible.

Here is the best tip we could give you....go find yourself a professional fire eater and pay them to teach you. Not only will you learn quicker, but you learn the handling of the fuels and the safety that needs to go along with this type of stunt. If you are looking to only learn it for fun, than this is not something that you would want to get involved in. Ask any fire eater who has been doing it for more than 10 years and you will find out the pros and cons of this stunt.

If you teach yourself here is a link you will need.

"...so tips would be nice."
The tip IS and the only one available here from the Pros is "Find a Personal Teacher and listen up" And when you get an answer from Harley, you can go no higher on the food chain.

Good answer. Welcome to the Café.
There are those who can teach just a single skill if that is what you want to do. Harley probably knows the geographic locations of somebody qualified or Brett (Freak Prodegy) you got any connections in the South?

I don't know of any specific studies on that, and I think it would be hard to do one as not every eater performs the same way or does the same number of shows. One performer just puts out one torch in their entire act, where as some do it over and over.
That would definately have an impact. I also think there is the matter of skill of the performer. Some people have better control with not swallowing fluids, breath control etc... And there are a lot of "fire performers" out there who are doing things COMPLETELY WRONG! That will definately screw up the numbers. Bottom line- It is a dangerous and health hazardous act. I don't reccommend it. But I'll still do it. Gwyd |
