Ask if these marvelous books are worth while, They are brilliant and IMHO any true magician will find a lifetime of practical and amazing magic within their covers. I recommend all 3 vols as well as another 20 or so of Harry's tomes.

There's SO much in the Apocalypse books. Ranging from self-working/mathematical to sleight-heavy. There are a lot of 'variations' on standard effects and a lot of original ideas too.
For me, some of the most interesting material in the Apocalypse books comes from Richard Vollmer. Anyone know where else (in English) I can find work by Richard Vollmer ? (I know there's a couple of effects in Card College by him too). His 'Very Nice Oil and Water' - and the variation of it in the fourth book is very cool! Jamie.

All three volumes of Apocalypse are great, but the first in the series is really special. You could practically make a living out of this book alone. I can't really imagine Lorayne being out-of-date - there's so much energy in his writing (and performances).

I recall the magazine as full of ideas and material worth performing. The time was right for some of the NY 'underground' material to surface and Harry provided the venue.
There is a two card transposition that Ken Krenzel helped me with called 'Now' which should still get about the same stunned reaction from audiences. Not much for the second deal crowd or gimick gang as I recall.

Whoever told you the stuff is out of date must have been smoking something illegal. Seriously man, get it. It's not always filled with excruciating presentational details and magic theory but there's more than enough widsom present to keep you in good stead. A lot of the good tricks and routines being marketed now would probably be published in Apocalypse if it was still around today. |

Have you read all of Card College yet? Do that before you consider making this investment in Apocalypse. You should learnt he most up to date sleights and handlings before you make a huge investment in past techniques, so you don't build bad habits or invest a lot of time in learning out of date moves.
Some of Lorayne's stuff is out of date, but most of it is still excellent. And even the stuff that is out of date are effects that you can often modify or improve with a little creativity (which I'm sure he'd approve of). Is he "out of date or still a legend?" Does one have to be state of the art in order to be a legend? I guess that rules out Beethoven or Shakespeare (not that I would put Lorayne quite in that category). He's probably not in my top 5, but definitely in the top 20.... |

Apocalypse - they would be my Desert Island books.
So much stuff and most of it good! Good magic is never out of date. |

I totally agree with ixnay66. In my opinion, the overall percentage of commercial, usable material over filler in Richard's Almanac exceeds that of Apocalypse. In Apocalypse, for every routine, trick, or sleight that I would actually work through or use, there were many more that I would pass by. I learned much more from the Almanac. I also found Richard's "Bull" column more interesting and entertaining than Harry's "Ellipses".

The only thing I didn't like about the books was that he rarely describes what the effect is before telling you the method which normally means reading the whole thing just to see if you like the effect.

Apocolapse is really good but if you really want good stuff in my opinion the best card stuff is steve beams semi automatic card tricks volume 3.But if you want an Appocolapse book get number 3 its the best out of all four of them.
On second thought if your going to get a book get richards almanac and don't waste your time with apocolapse. You can take three tricks from that book any tricks any in any order and have one of the best close up acts in the world. |

Out of date? What does that even mean? If you can learn anything from it then it's worth it, and any intelligent person can learn a lot from Harry Lorayne. Whether someone likes him or not, I think it would be unwise to ignore his myriad contributions. I happen to be a fan.

While Harry might not be as quick as he once was (As evidenced by the time it took him to find this thread.) ANY OF HIS STUFF is well worth the price it costs to purchase it. I repeat ANY OF HIS STUFF is well worth the price it costs to purchase it.
Legend is a matter of opinion. (One I happen to concur with.) But his contributions are a simple matter of fact. Not disputable at all.

Harry is still very much the legend. A great teacher and a great guy. Plus, nobody recovers from a flub better than Harry.

Harry is still a legend. The Apocalypse series has been and still is the best value in magic currently.
