Is there a generally recommended way to clean dirt and smudge marks off of dust jackets? I am, obviously, concerned with not using the wrong method or product because I don't want to do damage to the dust jacket. Believe it or not, one person recommended lighter fluid to me. I'm not going to take a chance with that one unless I hear more.
Many thanks. |

It depends on how old the dust jacket is, what the smudges are and how the dust jacket was printed.
Modern dust jackets are generally done with a thin laminated plastic coating on them. Lighter fluid won't hurt them. Some others may be damaged. Lighter fluid is basically a form of naphtha. It will dissolve grease, but generally won't harm paper or most kinds of printer's ink. In fact, stamp collectors use it to detect the watermarks on stamps. As they say with other cleaning methods, try it on an inconspicuous spot. Do not rub the stuff into the dustjacket. And be sure to work in a well-ventilated area. If the dust jackets are not too dirty, I would simply leave them alone. BTW, when I first started getting my library together, a friend of mine who was a book dealer told me that she recommended removing the dustjackets from the books, rolling them up, and putting them in a safe place. The cover of a book is made of much more durable stuff. The dustjacket is there to sell it.

You can find a lot of it in Who's Who in Entertainment or Who's Who in the World. I haven't updated my biography in a while. I really should do that.

Okay. So you don't have to find either of those books -- at one time, Marquis was giving us all a web site so we could post our biographies there -- I have posted a biography at http://www.hocuspocusjr.com/bio.htm .
It's not complete, but then again, I'm not done yet.
