I couldn't find anything on them and I am not familiar with these at all, of course I am by no means an expert or authority on the subject in any way. IMHO you can not go wrong with the Mogar Knives, the set sold by School for Scoundrels for Whit Haydn's Intricate Web of Distraction Routine are outstanding, and I never thought I would find something I liked as well as my old set of Merrill Knives. These by far exceeded my expectations and I have to say I enjoy these as much or more than my Merrill's.

I did a Google search on Tamariz Color Changing Knives and found a reference that leads me to believe that the Mogar knives will do the job. If you absolutely must have a set of the Tamariz knives, eBay may be the place to look.

Stevens Magic Emporium used to carry these, but they are no longer listed in their catalog. I believe that the Tamariz knives are the same as the knives of Jose De La Torres, who wrote "Ascanio's World of Knives". Both the Torres and the Tamariz knives had a little metal loop in one end. They can be seen (along with a lot of other notable knives) at :
http://magicref.tripod.com/magref/artknife.htm I think that I have a set of Torres knives in storage. I will check into it and let you know. Best regards, Glenn Godsey |

Torres made or sold knives just like the Tamariz knives I purchased from Ken Brooke back in the 70's. He also had a more regular pocket knife set he sold. Torres is no longer around in the magic business or he has passed away. After his burst on the magic seen in the early 1980's he then disappeared. He was from New Jersey and that is all I know about him, except he did a great finale in his stage act of producing 2 huge brandy sniffers with liquid in them.
If his book as noted by Glenn is still on the market, maybe he is still around. |

It wasn't "Torres." It was José de la Torre. He had a place in Belleville, New Jersey. De la Torre put out Ascanio's World of Knives, which he described as a free translation of sections of Ascanio's Navajas y Daltonismo. This was supposed to be volume 1. However, as far as I have been able to determine, there was never a volume 2.

If Stevens haven't got them, Tango magic (Argentina) makes knives that look identical.

There is a set of Jose De La Torre Color Changing Knives for sale on the big auction. They end this evening. Usual disclaimers.

Actually, one of our many members on the Café from Spain could give more information then here in the States. Being Ken Brooke got the knives from Tamariz and Jose De La Torre got his knives from Spain, then maybe they are a common knife in that country.

The little knives that they were selling for the climax of the routine actually came from China. They were a vending machine item. The other knives may be common over there.

Hi Jconstans.
Not like it is any of my business but is there a special reason for you to search specifically for kind of knives? Thanks, QH. |

Hi Quickhands,
I just like the look/design of the Tamariz knives as pictured here: That's all, no other reason, sad but true. I have a set of Mogar knives(outstanding! by the way) and wanted to try something different. All the best, J |

I like the Tamariz knives as well. When I was looking for my knives, I could not find anything like them. I found a set sold at Ronjo that distantly resembles swiss army knives.

There are two companies that manufacture genuine Swiss Army Knives, Wenger and Victorinox. One of them will make custom SAK's for you; however, they are usually not good for CCK because of the bad thickness/width ratio. A ratio of 3:5 is a good one for paddle move tricks. 4:5 is better, 1:1 is good. Anything outside that range becomes problematic.
The Tamariz knives are good, but I never liked the little loops. They got in the way for me. That's a personal consideration, nothing more. I thought the Merrill knives looked cheap. There were some knives that had rivets that were different on one side than on the other that were promoted by De la Torre. They worked well, but I didn't like those rivets. The Lanny Kibbey knives are fine. The fact that they have a slight S bend in them is never caught by the customer. But they are difficult to obtain. Tom Bartlett, who is a forum member makes knives.

Some of them handled better than others and with one exception, they all followed the "Palmer rule" (very close to "square" works better, some were literally square). The exception was a VC knife that handled really well and "looked" almost flat, I am thinking that perhaps it was an illusion and the knife was not so flat after all. ;-) QH. QH. |

The Tamariz knives can still be found in Spain made by Juan Escolano. For those interested take a look at http://personal.telefonica.terra.es/web/......los1.htm
Tell him I sent you. |

As the Café's resident Swiss Army Knife (SAK) expert, allow my to input some info :^)
To my knowledge, neither Victorinox or Wenger has ever produced color changing knife sets. I have never seen a packaged set made expressly for this purpose. However, it is an easy thing to pop off the scale on one side and replace it with a scale (handle) of a different color. So any enterprising individual could do it, package it, and sell SAK CC Knives. This is only possible on the smaller models (58mm and 74mm), as the larger models have a corkscrew or screwdriver on one side of the knife (outside of the scale). Anyone who did this would soon find, as Bill mentioned, that it would not be a profitable venture, as SAKs and CC Knives really don't go well together. So, anyone can easily make their own SAK CC Knives, as long as they know it is possible to remove a scale and re-apply a scale of another color. I have a collection of about 75 SAKs that began in 1993 on a visit to Switzerland. What Bill is to cups, I am to SAKs. However, strangely enough (being into magic and SAKs), I have done little research on this particular issue (CC SAKs), so any first-hand knowlegde/experience anyone may have will be very useful to me.
