My vote is for Power Plays, Mike takes magic and gives the routine a bang. not just another routine that will sit in the closet. If you get a chance to meet or see Mike or Ron Jaxon don't pass it up!
I've been doing Magic over 30 years now so go buy the book!!! |

Difficult to say as I've purchased quite a few books. But for the moment you could add John Born's "Meant to be".

Without question: POWER PLAYS
While Todd Karr's books are great - I treasure The Secret Ways of Al Baker, and I am certain the Benson book will be my next purchase after Steve Beam's next two; unless Mr. Lorayne gets volume three of Best of Friends done this year, then Benson gets bumped to January - Power Plays is simply packed with great "gets the money" magic. No pipedreams, clean and concise structuring and blocking. Of course, I expect nothing less from Mr. Powers. I really do not understand Eric Mead's objections to this book at all. His review in Magic was inaccurate IMHO. No need for me to quote it, but those of us who have this well written book know better. This is not a slam on Eric Mead who is without a doubt one of magic's best. That being said, I caution anyone who is thinking of buying ANYTHING to seek out as many different opinions as possible. Thanks Mike Powers for a GREAT book! You are and have always been on my short list of authors from whom I KNOW always produces quality product! |

What were Eric Mead's objections to Power Plays?

I think he felt that many of the tricks were too derivative. He also seemed to feel that many items were "session" tricks i.e. for other magi.
While many items are "variations", I felt that they were significantly different from the items that inspired them. A case in point would be I.T.H. Triumph, an item that Mr. Mead singled out as "convoluted." Obviously it's a variation of Vernon's wonderful Triumph effect. Here the goal was to create three separate, but related effects. A signed card is returned to the deck which is then shuffled face up into face down. The magic Jack of Spades is turned face down, causing the entire deck to go face down. The jack is turned face up and the entire deck is face up. Finally the jack disappears from the face and is found to have sandwiched a single card face down between itself and its “brother” the jack of clubs. It’s the selection. Convoluted?? In fact I.T.H. Triumph was performed by John Luka at FFFF this year for Bill Malone who really dug it…… That’s enough validation for me. Mr. Mead did like “Expert Cards to Pocket” and some of the “quirkier” items like Ron Jaxon’s “Outsmokin’” routine and a straw routine. There are a number of items, especially in the section on “Mathematical Mysteries” that will work well as session tricks. They are magician foolers. However, I use them in the real world too with great success. Intelligent lay people understand and appreciate extremely fair conditions that lead to a mind blowing ending. PM Plus would be a case in point as would Heisting Histed Heisted. I use both of these items in platform type shows (not both in the same show). I can assure you that they kill laypeople as well as magicians. In fact Max Maven, in his review of PM Principle (the forerunner of PM Plus) mentioned that it plays for laypeople as well as magicians. Although there are some positive aspects to Eric Meads review, it is rather brutally negative. I felt a bit vindicated when Peter Duffie’s review in MAGIC came out. It is extremely positive as is Steve Bryant’s review in Little Egypt Gazette. As always, I take reviews from experts like Eric Mead seriously. And, although I do feel that he missed the boat on Power Plays, I respect his opinion and I hope that I can use his review to become a better creator/performer of magic. I try to emulate one of my profs from grad school who once said, “I thrive on criticism.” This is a really healthy attitude. It is nice to find that the book has been so well received by the magic community as a whole. That’s what really matters to me. Mike

Funnything, I already had a lot of the stuff from Mike and I still bought Powerplays just to keep all that good material in one place. I have used PM principle for almost 10 years now. I bought it when it was a little yellow pamphlet. Killed then, still kills now. Great job Mike!! James ps VIP also rocks [sorry, had to throw that in]

Thanks James! I hope you have checked out PM Plus in Power Plays. It is far superior to the original PM Prinicple. If you have the original manuscript, check out the method for moving a block of cards and getting the selection to a known position. There are many posibilties with this that are not explained in the new book. The manuscript still has some value!

I was completely shocked by the review of Power Plays in Genii. It is funny how some of these reviews, no matter what you offer, are still a complete roll of the dice.
Mike Powers is one of the rare gems in the magic community, and anything he has to say, I am first in line to listen. All I can say is that I have seen Powers KILL with material out of his latest book - the material has a wide range from very commercial to diabolically genius. I and the magic community applaud your release. Thanks Mike! John B |
