Hiya, Magi:
I love Classical Magic and especially that of the 1920s to the mid-1950s, where Tommy Windsor may be found. His Popcorn Dye Box is a neat little bit that I use in various ways with my silk work. Typically, I gaff a box of some recognisable product purchased at the market: Microwave popcorn, cake mix, whatever. But how about this: Fast food places often pack their inedible wares in even more-recognisable packaging, which they will often GIVE away for FREE. I've got a nice little assortment of boxes that were handed out 4-5 at a time on request. No questions asked, they just gave 'em to me when I bought a soda or coffee. |

I still have my original Windor's Popcorn Dye Box from back in the 1960's. Of course I don't use it anymore, but have made and used newer versions. Without digging it out, I believe it has the old E-Z Magic logo printed on it somewhere.

Besides a set-up for a Darrow gag (!) Windsor's Popcorn Dye Box is...hm; a sort of Change Bag made out of a cardboard carton instead of fabric. Ideal for silks, bills, cards, small items requiring little space. There's actually a pretty clever booklet of bits and routines (not sure if it's still in print, tho') for this simple apparatus.
Hey, Wmhegbli! Not sure it's something for you Chavez guys, but for wannabes like me it works okay Leland |

Ahhh....Windsor's popcorn dye box! I bought mine from Flosso-Hornmann's mail order catalog back in the early 70's...it was the first magic trick I ever purchased, and cost all of $1.50 (yes, I still have the catalog!), and I still have it (the dye box) stashed away somewhere. It was so much fun to use! I believe the Dye Box Book is still available; I bought it many years ago also, but I think I have seen it around somewhere. Thanks for bringing back a lot of good memories!!

It's been "reinvented" or as he calls it "revisited" by Professor Spellbinder for use with the new PLASTIC pop corn boxes found in Dollar Tree and other Dollar stores. You'll find out how to make your own in the Mini-Mysteries Book 4 at the Magic Nook. As it says in his advertisement: "It works NOTHING like the old Windsor Dye Box, or any other magic trick we know of, but it does the same tricks as the Windsor Dye Box, plus many new ones. For example, it can start by filling up with real popcorn, and then do all those silk tricks, but with a lot more silks and bigger silks. How about adding liquids? You wouldn't dare with a cardboard box, but now you'll be able to push in a red silk and pour out a glass of red liquid!"

For those who didn't know, there's also a book packed with ideas - "Tommy Windsor's Dye Box Book". It's older and a little harder to find. I have one in my personal library.
I did a quick google search, and here's a couple of links that showed up for the book: http://midwestmagic.net/shop/item.aspx?itemid=8373 http://winklersmagicwarehouse.com/store/......windsor/ Laflin Magic also sells the (original) popcorn dye box: http://www.laflinmagicstore.com/product-p/mpdpdb.htm Also, the (original) Popcorn Dye Box can be found on some other magic store websites with a quick google search. - Donald

The booklet "Tommy Windsor's Dye Box Book" describes how to make your own. Of course, you need to purchase some popcorn boxes too! I can provide info on legitimate and free available copies but am reluctant to post in the open access section of the Café. If anyone wants to know where, PM me and I'll provide the where. The source has been posted on the Café before.

Hi Jim,
I'm intrigued. I've looked at those plastic boxes a number of times (they keep calling to me as I walk by them!) wondering how to make stealth modifications to them. Reading your description I have some sort of an idea on the method (but I could be way off!) so better get your booklet for my next project. (Currently making a cardboard version). Phil Quote:

One hint: the plastic is thin enough to easily cut with sharp scissors or a razor knife, as if it were cardboard!
