Like you say a single die as in a pair of dice. Sorta like "die" but with more of a "a" sound.

Actually, according to Vernon himself, it really didn't matter whether you pronouced it "Die" or "Day" (in either case, it's an abbreviation of his real name, David.)
When asked which pronunciation was correct, Vernon would say: "Ee-ther -- or eye-ther!" Possibly too subtle for some! |

Most say "Die" but Michael Skinner always called him "Day"
As though Mr Marucci needed my validation! Dave |

Hey, Dave, you've got the same first name as Vernon, so YOU should be the expert!

I hate that when magicians always say to me... NO NO NO... it's Day! lol

I wondered the same thing when I first got into magic, Justin.
Good story, Peter. Vernon sounds like he was quite a person. I know the material and influence he left behind was incredible. I only wish I could have gotten the chance to meet him.

Unfortunately, I doubt we'll ever get a 100% accurate story of his life. THE VERNON CHRONICLES are an interesting read and will give you a very good overview of his life story.
Volume 4 is actually a biography of his life. It is pretty well written by Bruce Cervon and Keith Burns. Because he is so revered by our small community quite a lot of his life was glossed over so as not to tarnish his image and a lot of the "spice" was eliminated. I was never lucky enough to meet Mr. Vernon, however, I was/am friends with quite a few people who knew him well. Some of the stories I've heard are just fantastic tales of a period in time that I doubt will ever be duplicated. He met and sessioned with some of the greatest magicians of all time, so far. There are a couple of his stories about his obsession with cards, how he hunted down a guy in the midwest just because he heard that this guy could do a legitimate center deal and Mr. Vernon wanted to learn it. He made his living in the early part of the century on Coney Island selling horoscopes and cutting silhouettes of and for the tourists. As an interesting aside: When my family and I go to Disneyland every couple of years, we generally have the kids' silhouettes done by the artist who works there. While she was working, I happened to mention that a "Guy named Dai Vernon" used to cut silhouettes at Coney Island. She got excited and said he was one of the most respected artists ever in this discipline and collectors are always after a piece "Done by Vernon." I said, "He's one of the greatest magicians of all time." She said, "Oh, he does magic too?" Later in the conversation she mentioned she used to date a magician years and years ago. Some guy named Brad Burt!! I agree, Mr. Vernon's life is a great story and I think it would make a great movie. But they'd mess that up, too. I've not much (zero) info on the other great magician of our lifetime. Is there anything on the Biography of Mr. Marlo available? Non-magic manual type books? Dave |
