I've been thinking of putting a couple of the classics into my act. Of these, I'd really like to perform the Egg Bag! There are so many on the market including; Max Malini's bag, Martin Lewis Bag, Senor Mardo, Tarbell, and so on...
I'm interested in doing a standard routine. More than likely, it will come out of Tarbell. Any recommendations or personal preference on what bag to use? Along these same lines, is an egg bag hard to construct? I would like to pick out the fabric that matches my show's motif and have one made. More than likely, my mom will sew this as she has with majority of my fabric needs. She's done a lot of sewing for both my show and my father's show, as I was growing up. Many of the items have been somewhat complex and not your normal quilting projects! She's made everything from dove harnesses, dove pockets, a few topits, devil's hanks, and my dove vest! My point is- she knows her way around the sewing machine! I do plan to purchase the Egg Bag DVD from Steven's. I'm not writing this post to ask who makes the best bag or who I should buy from. I'd like tested results and honest opinions on practicality. We are not able to reveal any methods on here and I am not searching for methods. I'm well aware of the workings. I just didn't know the diference between the various bags... Anything you can throw my way will help. PM me if you have to! Magically, Bryan Gilles p.s.- any idea what model Hobson or Mullica use? |

Hobson, Mullica, and Johnny Thompson all use the Malini style bag.
The booklet "Ken Brookes and Friends on the Malini Egg Bag" has a pattern and instructions for making the bag, I believe. The real secret is to iron between seams. I don't know much about the other styles of bag. |

As I understand, the p**k** on the Malini bag is a little small! Can anyone confirm this?
Has anyone made a bag from the book Whit has mentioned? (Ken Brookes and Friends on the Malini Egg Bag) -Bryan |

I used home made ones based on the Malini bag style. I made my own pattern and played around with sizes of the gimmick etc.
The fabric I used is a VERY thin pseudo silk, the result of which is it will fit inside a hollow egg very nicely, so I was able to do a standard egg bag, and seguey into an egg to silk type routine where the BAG would vanish, later showing hollow egg, laer becoming real egg etc. Made for a nice combo. In one of our new books we talk about an egg bag I used made to look like a christmas stocking, doing egg bag with a small present and ending with a final load of a HUGHE pile of coal. Lots of fun to be had here for you AND the audience!

For the Malini stlye Egg Bag both Frank Starsinic http://www.theambitiouscard.com and Lynetta Welch http://www.fabricmanipulation.com make excellent bags. Their gimmicks are larger than the cheaper bags on the market.

Leaping Lizards- good advice!
Doug- As I stated in my first post, I'm not looking to purchase from anyone! I will have this made from material that matches my show motif. I'd love to hear more adive from people who perform this... -Bryan |

Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

I know there was instructions on making it way back in a old issue of Genii Magazine. I think it was part of Charlie Miller's section. Mickey O'Mallay did the drawing for it. Magic Inc. use to sell a good Malini bag and Danny Tong makes and sells a very good Malini bag at about $45. |

Bryan:
I have performed the Egg Bag in every show for the past ten years. I have done it on stage and at strolling gigs as well. Most of the Malini bags I've seen and worked with have a gimmick that is much too small for the eggs that we use now. The bags used to be sold with a ridiculous "poulet' size wooden egg that wouldn't fool a white cane convention. Now, most magicians (I hope!) are using the blown eggs. If the gimmick in the bag is too small, the egg gets hung up throughout the routine. Frank Starsinic asked me to help him with the design of his Malini style bag which I happily agreed to do. The first prototypes had a gimmick that was too small. The changes were made and now the bag is excellent. Lynetta also has a larger gimmick that most other bags and although slightly smaller than Frank's design, works very well. I understand Pauline Tong makes an excellent bag but I've not seen one so I can't make an informed comment. In the case of Franks' and Lynetta's designs, the "wheel" is pretty darn good. If you want to re-invent it by making your own, so be it. Just be careful if you're using some old pattern from thirty years ago. The gimmick will most likely be too small and you'll nothing but grief. The Egg Bag is a great rick and with the right routine, can be a highly entertaining addition to your show. Hope this helps. Best of luck with it. Doug |

I can't compare my egg bag to Frank's because I have not seen his, but I can tell you that my egg bag was designed by Johnny Thompson and Charlie Miller. Of all the performing magicians who are alive today, I don't think anyone would argue the fact that Johnny Thompson is the eminent expert on the subject. I would love to accept credit for "my" egg bag, but I got the design from Johnny Thompson. Johnny and Charlie Miller are who designed the larger curved pocket and that is one of the most important features of my egg bag. The size of the bag is small, which makes the trick that much more amazing. However, upon request I make larger bags for magicians who have large hands, or for those who simply prefer a larger bag. I think the fabric choice is very important; it took me over a year to find what I thought was the best fabric, a heavyweight silk. It hides the egg, but drapes and moves beautifully.
It's not impossible to make your own, but I will tell you, I made over twenty bags (which all got thrown out) before I felt I got it right. Lynetta |

Be sure to check the past threads on the egg bag. You'll find a lot of information!
Here's the link to Pauline Tong's site: http://www.magicbypauline.com/ I use Tong Tarbell Bags and I love them. I own three! The Martin Lewis routine works well with them, with one slight modification to the presentation. |

I have used a number of Malini bags for over 25 years. I have used ones from Magic Inc., Pauline Tong's, and Lynetta. I use regular large egg that I have blown out myself and have never had problems with the size of the pocket and the size of the egg. If you need it made is a specific material contact Lynetta. A Malini bag is difficult to make yourself and have it look good. Spend the money and have it made right.

Since I was involved in writing and sketching the Malini Egg Bag instructions for Ken Brooke, I can tell you there is no pattern for making the bag.
If you have a specific fabric Brian, send it to Lynetta. However, let me tell you, the Malini Bag should be BLACK, for contrast with the egg. You could get away with DARK BLUE or MAROON, but anything else defeats the way the Malini bag/routine works. If you have a design to the fabric, then have it made in the Tarbell/Mardo/Martin Lewis style. Martin does a routine very similar to the Miller/Malini/Thompson handling with that style bag. There is a book, titled, "The Egg Bag Book" (I believe, available from http://www.stevensmagic.com that does have patterns for making bags.

If I did not use my own bag I would use Lynetta's. Hers has splendid material as well as construction. They are a work of art. The best.
I bought a used one a few weeks ago from a Café member just to have one, as it was being offered at a great deal. I had a specific feature I wanted on my bag that is not available elsewhere and I was tired of the cheapos. I knew I could certainly provide a far better bag to the magic community for close to the same price as a cheapo and so I did.

Hey there Brian, I do have to mention that Lynetta does make the best bag available today. Her craftsmanship is second to none. I just had her make me a few items for my act and they are great. Brian

I have a Tong and and a Lynetta Welch. The Tong is a little larger, and much lighter fabric. It p****t is made on the natural inside. The Welch p****t is a little larger, but not totally indetectable when if the spectator reaches into the bag for the egg. I had someone tell me that they "felt the lining" when they reached in - not as easily discernable with the Tong bag.
The long and the short of it is, I use each for a different routine. Each has it's strengths. I also use my own blown eggs, or Eggxactly (sp) eggs. I have never used a Viking egg, but I hear they are great. Scott
Magic is an art. I am merely a tour guide.

Spectator should never FEEL the P****T as their fingernail side of the hand is on that side. You should study the Ken Brooke handling.
