seems like the cartwheel illusion you see in films. Even though you know its turning forward, it seems to turn backward. |

The reason it seems to alternate is that it isn't really spinning. The color areas just alternate back and forth. Your brain tries to make it out as movement, because that's what experience tells you. But since there isn't a direction, it vascillates in its interpretation.

Right click on the image and "save under..." I think.
I really like the fact that you apparently change the rotating direction with your mind...look at the center dot and think "left", it goes left. Concentrate on "right", you see it going right!!! I'm going nuts. :) |
