What do you think of this guy on "crossing over" on fox? I think his name is John Edward. What cold reading techniques is he using? I don't have any knowledge on the subject of coldreading.

I think that Edwards started out with more methods than he is using now, but has gone more and more into the cold reading or such (I do not want to get into the semantics of what cold reading is here, we all know what I mean).

Edwards in my opinion is an out right fraud and scum. Hard words yes, but he is taking advantage of people's most precious moment of need for his own fame and furtherment. I had a friend of our family who went to a spiritualist. After she believed her son who had passed away communicated with her everyday. She began to neglect the rest of her family. Her other children who where here and needed a mother. Her husband almost divorced her. The story goes on and on. But it was all due to that brief moment of "relief and happiness" the spiritualist brought to her. Hey, to me a crack junkie feels happiness and relief when they shoot up, but does that mean I should give it to them?

On the other hands, I think Edwards is extremely talented in what he does. Probably the best I have seen. Even Van Praag, who was there before Edwards, has taken on the language, tone and body communication of Edwards. As a result Van Praag no longer looks as good as he used to. He looks like an Edwards wannabe.

On the same note (I know I may step on some toes here) lets take Copperfield and Blaine. In Copperfield's last special he looked like he was trying to be a Blaine wannabe. Copperfield is so talented. I felt (and only my opinion) that Copperfield would have much better spending his time going back to his roots and the beautiful vignettes he use to perform. Those were brilliant and the large illusions made him what he was. The last special and tornado of fire was very disappointing.

The lesson here, even for pros is to be yourself, very rarely can one be someone else and be better. Unless your Robin Williams of course Smile Again, I know this is controversial and only my opinion. I am not as successful as Copperfield or Edwards so I can only armchair quarterback.

to be honest, I know nothing about Colin Fry. We have quite a few of them here in the US. About four or five major ones that hit TV all the time. Van Praag and Edwards have a daily appearing show so most know them. But from what I have seen so far, the show is the same just the face is different

Have you ever wasted a half hour of your life watching van pragh? He slips up too much. Really bad editing, Edwards has those sci fi channel guys working hard editing at least.

You betcha, and Edwards is known for some creative editing. Nod's for one question will act as postive response for another.

My wife just informed me that one of her real Estate freinds told her she went to an actual taping (wife was not sure if it was Edwards or Praag) and they had to fill out a very detailed form that included questions like, who would you like to contact, do you have any specific questions you would like answered and so on. After the show, they are turned over to another medium for further consultation since the "star" is so busy.

Interesting huh Smile....

Has anybody seen that ridiculous Pet Psychic? She actually tells you what your pets are thinking, dead or alive. Either television is really sinking, or there are people who are naive enough to watch.

On the surface it sounds like a crazy idea but look deeper and you realize that many people love their pets as much or more than they love their own children. Sooo.... if people fall for talking to their deceased loved ones, then it is not a big leap for pets.

HAH PK! sweet. My dog is called SUKI, we thought we were like the originators of this until MR BROWN came on TV and did PK TOUCHES with a woman who happened to be called SUKI...absolutley devistated!
Just thought I'd tell you as an aside Mr Banachek, I think you are an excellent performer and a real inspiration to us all. It is really wonderful that someone of such a high stature would still come to magic boards and discuss (sometimes irrelevant) issues with us all! I must commend you for that and thank you graciously,
Keep the works coming!

Everyone keep in mind, people will believe the extraneous if they want to, or wish they could. Just like this pet person, Edward, etc.

Thanks Bryan,

Actually when I was a kid we had two daschounds, suki and suzi.

I also had a cocker spaniel at one time called Chaval, (shaval) sabatian Torbin. That was his pedigree name. Had to have a real name, but this name does not sound real to me. My border collie called Tiger (bad name for a black and white dog) had a real name to me.

I will not go into all the pets I have had, as there are way to many and everything from a tarantula to a flying squirrel to a pig.

I love animals but these other two chihauhas drive me crazy. One is big and fat, and the other poops and pees everywhere.

Now what was the forum about, oh yes mentalism.

Sooo.. I once trained a dog to pick a card I wanted him to pick out of a deck. Actually I came across it by accident. My girlfreind at the time had a dog and he would reach in and take a card. So I would just fan force the right card to him. Pretty cool.

Speaking of which, the new book I have coming out has two books in one, and the book by HJ Burlingame that is part of the whole book teaches how to "train a dog to pose as a mind reader, magician and mathmatician" pretty cool stuff.

Can I just add that "The Psychic Show", inflicted on us in the UK earlier this year, is one of the funniest things I've ever seen masquerading as reality....

I can't believe the Pet Psychic keeps a straight face. On one show I saw (purely for research purposes, you understand) someone had brought in a cat which "seemed unhappy". After a private personal consultation WITH THE CAT, the Psychic revealed that it had told her it had "a playful side to its nature" but was "lonely", and advised the owner to get another cat to keep it company. And the owner was delighted with this reading, because now she really understood what had been upsetting the poor kitty.

Smile

With people like these, is there any hope for the human race?

I think that depends on how you define "success". If one "sells his soul" to become famous/wealthy (as Edwards has) is that "success"? If one loses the "magic" and just goes thru the motions (as Copperfield often appears to), is that "success"?

But if one loves his craft, and truly enjoys performing and teaching others who enjoy the craft, it shows. And if that's how one measures success, you come out way above the aforementioned, IMHO.

I will definitely second that one Doctoramazo... I would also like to add the class Banachek has shown to this forum for not "pusing" his material on us. I can't stress enough how this shows excellent character and modesty. Hat's off Buddy.
