II knew Derren was going to sneak in here somehow, let him host his own session LOL
Actually I am very impressed with Derren. He really has worked on his presentation of supposed reading body language. He comes of as a sneaky fun loving elf with a glandular problem, hence a tall elf (thanks Whoopie). I say supposed because to get the success he does, one could not rely only on body language alone. Yes there are some things that body language will enable you to do, but usually it only enables us, as mentalists to enhance the trickery, not accomplish it. There are a few exceptions such as the Psychopysicalogical Response or even the pupil effect I mention in Psychological Subtleties. I am surprised at how many knowledgeable magicians have actually fallen for this explanation and believe that is all he uses. But again, this is due to Derren's skill as an entertainer. I think Derren has more than anyone, helped to show something I have known for years, and sometimes been crucified for; and that is that there are other ways to present mentalism besides saying one is psychic. This is a good thing. However, as I have said elsewhere on the magic Café, and in this forum, we have to be careful that our new claims are not as bad as our old claims. A lie is a lie. Bottom line though is, Derren is a brilliant thinker, and a brilliant entertainer. I wish him more continued success. I'm also amazed but not surprised that there are those who try to tear Derren's success down and put it off to just being in the right place at the right time. I have heard a few say that Derren is a "made mentalist like the Monkeys were a made band. There was a TV crew with a series of ideas and the got Derren to do it." This is really not fair to Derren. Yes there was a TV show and yes Derren was approached and yes many of the effects were thought up before, but keep in mind. Derren was already a talented mentalist. Many of Derren's personal routines appeared on his specials, and within those that were not his original inventions, you can certainly see Derren's style and input. You can have all the luck in the world but if you do not have the talent to pull it off? Well.... Derren has that talent. Derren should get credit for it from all of us. He is good at what he does. Even if for some reason you think you are better and could a better job, you should not belittle his talent and success. The same goes for those critics of David Blaine. Celebrate his success, he has helped us all. I was actually disappointed I did not have the time to meet up with Derren while in London. I did promise it would happen next time. It will be my pleasure.

I was so impressed by Banachek's response to this thread. Here he is, asked about his "competition" (although we all know there is more than enough work out there for all of us), and Banachek could have used this chance to make himself seem like the better performer. However, he showed his respect for Derren as a performer and for mentalism as an artform.
Mr. Banachek, I already had a lot of respect for you due to your amazing creative mind and from how much our mutual friend Jim Auer raves about you. It has been refreshing to experience the mind of Banachek the PERSON (as opposed to Banachek the PERFORMER) in this forum.

Thanks for the very kind words Brent,
I just try to keep in mind none of us are perfect and I have lots of skeletons in my closet, things I may not be so proud of and would have done differently if I could. (no I will not discuss them here) And if you were to ask my wife (one reason she is not here ) I am sure she could fill you in of my many not so lovable attributes Really though, thanks. James Auer is a truly wonderful man and great thinker, I mention his book "The Spirit is willing" elswhere in this forum. A search will find it.

It's great to see someone celebrating the success of people like David Blaine and Derren Brown for a change.

Thanks,
I think if we can strive to try to make others feel they are at thier best when they are with us, and want to be at their best, we ourselves will be very happy in return.

Hello Banachek, good to see you here. You said...
"I think Derren has more than anyone, helped to show something I have known for years, and sometimes been crucified for; and that is that there are other ways to present mentalism besides saying one is psychic" I have to tell you that YOU are the reason I was able to develop a style of mentalism for myself that works without claiming to be psychic. Thanks for all your contibutions over the years. Tim |

Thanks Tim,
Just great to hear you were able to find something that you were comfortable with. Years ago, Randi told me that he would be happy if just one performer got his start due to him or was influenced by him. Well, Penn & Teller and many others say just that today. I always thought it was great if someone would one day tell me they got their start, or I was able to help them through my influence, to be the performer they are today (of course hoping they are a great performer ) So thank you, to hear things like that mean an awful lot.
