Banachek,
Several times in this forum you have mentioned that you have a number of agents who book shows for you. Some specialize in the college market, others the corporate market, etc. My question is: How does one go about finding a good agent? How did you get your FIRST agent? And what do you believe are important qualities to look for when searching for an agent?

Look in your local phone book under entertainment. There you will find a whole list of talent agents, all on different levels. Some only do high priced corporate work, others do small parties.
If you are a beginner and starting out, I would suggest you do not contact the high priced corporate agents till you have worked the smaller parties. There, at those parties, you will often run into the other agents. They will let you know when you are ready to move up by offering you work. I would also suggest that you go meet with the local agents, offer to take them to lunch if you can afford it. This way they get to know you, and you can impress them to want to sell you. From there you will need promotional material to enable the agent to do his or her job. This will include business cards, a video and brochure or promo book. Keep in mind; your business cards will only be for the agent, so you can bypass that if you want. Any shows you do for them, you should always hand out their cards with your name on them. This is essential for they?re to be continued good will between you and the agent. If an agent finds out you booked a show at their even and they did not get a commission from it, you can be well assured you will no longer be asked to work for that agent again. Keep in mind; we are talking about agents here and agencies. Not managers. Getting a good manager is that big mystery we are all searching for.
