Woody Allen's character in his newest film "Scoop" is a magician and it stars Scarlett Johansson who is also in "The Prestige".

The previews sound intersting. May be they will make people want to see the more traditional stage magic again instead of this new street magic.

There's two more actually coming in 2007:
One stars Tom Hanks and his son in a movie called The Great Buck Howard: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460810/ The other stars Jeremy Piven among a cast of other famous names including Andy Garcia, Ray Liotta, Ryan Reynolds, Ben Affleck, and Jason Bateman to name a few. That movie's called Smokin' Aces: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475394/ Apparently magic is the new thing in Hollywood! -Eric D. |

It's just a fad. In '08, there will be nine movies about scrapbooking.

It's just because magic is about the only thing left that Hollywood hasn't sucked all of the life out of yet.
Hollywood is all about copying last year's big hit. Once a studio gets wind that another, more successful studio is producing a blockbuster, star-studded movie about 'X', they get rolling right away on a copycat production. Once eight or ten copycat movies have sucked every bit of life out of the subject, they move on to copying the next big thing.

My only worry is that there will probably be some exposure of tricks in every one of these movies. No doubt that I will see them but I'm not looking forward to any exposure that may take place.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from the preview I saw for The Prestige, it seems that the magician is something more, supernatural if you will.
Can't wait for those scrapbooking movies. |

I Watched The Illusionist yesterday. In general a good entertaining movie. The story is the best part with a very unexpected ending. As for the magic well, it is stationed in Austria in the late 19th or early 20th century. VEry interesting and everything unseen for the epoch. Well, think of it, even today must be unheard many of them. I kept remembering Pepper´s Ghost mostly.

And, by the way, one of the magic consultants was Ricky Jay. The other one I couln´t see because the credits rolled so fast, contrary to the movie that may be a little slow at times

To a certain extent, The Prestige is probably the most realistic fantasy save for the very end...
There are actually ANOTHER two movies regarding magic. The War Magician (Staring Tom Cruise?) Essentially the story of how Jasper Maskelyne used his magic to make an entire city 'vanish' to protect it from attack. Carter Vs. The Devil - Not much known here... Just a rumor spreading through the movie buff sites. Derek Merdinyan |

How many of these are actually about our type of magic. Most Hollywood movies about magic or magicians are more about camera tricks than our magic, or it is the supernatural kind of stuff.
There certainly won't be any exposure on these movies.

You know The Prestige seems to have some relation to Carter vs. the Devil too. At least it looks like the main trick from the book is also used in the Prestige. For awhile I thought The Prestige was that book turned into a movie. After seeing more previews I'm sure its not, but they do seem to have similarities. Either way I'm looking forward to it.
