Another vote for the Paul Daniels routine. I've seen it live several times, and it's brilliant. Paul has been doing this routine for YEARS, and it shows; every pause, nuance, and gag is timed to perfection.
Is it published anywhere? Someone above mentioned it was a Ken Brooke routine? Not that I would copy it (Heaven forbid!), but there are some nice elements in it that could be judiciously borrowed assuming it's a published routine. |

Awful. I found it amazing there was literally NO REACTION to the appearance of the first final load ball.
Someone send this fellow a copy of Don Alan doing the routine. HOWEVER...it did give me an idea for a different way to do a final load. Will try it out tonight and let you know if it goes. On second thought, don't send him Don's routine, ask him to donate his cup to a needy magician. :kermit:

That clip was of John Bannon's routine. It's a great routine.
He certainly didn't pull it off very well.

The routine was way too long and not "tight" enough.
Nice to see the universal spectator response of immediately picking up the load balls just to check they're "real".

Not tight enough is a great way to describe it.
Too much fumbling in the pockets. Looks like 2 squirrels were fighting in there. Patter was certainly not ready for prime time. I wonder how many non-magicians search out YouTube to watch magic??? Hopefully, it's not many. The ratio of bad to good is astounding.

I, and Josh #2, have been adding to the YouTube magic. So, unfortunately, the ratio will only get worse.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Here's my goofy IDEA. You say, "OK, I put the ball in my pocket, and it came back...right? Now, if I put the cup in my pocket (do so and get load ball into it)... (laugh) say, "Ha, what do you think I am a real magician?" Bring cup out loaded and do something to delay the reveal.

Pete, when you said goofy, did you mean in a brilliant way? I love it! It's also a good excuse to go to your pocket to palm.

Great idea! I'll definitely try that for one of the loads in a 3 cup routine. Just wondering, though, in a chop cup routine, if a spectator would "backtrack" to see where the load could have been? And how easy is delaying the reveal with a one cup routine, Pete? (Btw, if that sounded like a sarcastic question, it wasn't - I'm genuinely asking!)

Don't delay. I'll try to be vague:
When the cup goes to your pocket, scoop the you-know-what ball and palm #1. Remove the cup inverted. Let them put the visible ball in your pocket. Reveal and load.

I think Pete's idea is a good one, as well. Add a little humorous byplay, or do something magical with the little ball, and the audience (having the attention span of circus monkeys) would probably not remember enough to backtrack. A few seconds would be enough.
Josh, Maybe we should both be #1. There is another Josh or two on this board, so they can be #2.

That's a great idea, Pete! With the right attitude and routine, that will really work wonders. Thanks for the tip.

I'm fatter, will die sooner (God willing), and have added far less even though our post count is reasonably close. I was attempting a compromise, but you forced my hand.
I am #1. Try to stay on topic, this is about some kind of magic thing.

Did a show tonight but didn't have a cup. Did my bowl routine with a toilet plunger and produced a big nut (with permission from Don Alan) and forgot how strong that routine is. I use Johnny Thompson's sequence, doing the load at the reveal when she opens her hand to find two sponge balls. You could load a truck with that misdirection. The other strong piece was Poker Chip Surprise, which was very timely as they knew I was flying to Las Vegas tomorrow.

Tonight, caught without my PK ring (I don't yet own a chop cup), I performed my basic routine. Instead, I used "Pinky Power." It killed! I loved the reaction, and I was quietly proud of the fact I had used no gimmick. During the performance, I recalled the advise from Ammar's book on CC&B; focus on the object, look at the audience, and say something engaging (or something to that effect), and it worked like magic...it was a rough crowd. Excuse me for being so excited, but I am!
Cheers!
