I found a great story about a group of pickpockets who might be just a bit better at picking pockets than your average magician. Or at least as bit more creative with their misdirection
In Germany three people were arrested in conjunction with a pickpocket ring. The two ladies approached a man a threw feces at him after explaining the gentleman that they had seen it fly from a above building they helped clean him off....and out at the same time. Moment’s later gentleman stopped to help clean him as well. The fecal covered man noticed what was going on and rumbled them and called for the police. Shortly after this the three were arrested for the pinch. My thought is this; this mob has a tool, one stall and a Duke man and they still need to resort this kind of misdirection for theft. I guess there is no training for proper villains today. I can’t help but think about the judge asking why they did this disgusting crime and if their answer will be S**t Happens |

Interesting story! I've heard of a similar ruse used in the streets of India, where someone flicks 'a lump' onto your shoe and then offers to help clean it for you. In so doing, of course, he also cleans (out) your pockets. I guess the reason they resort to this ploy is because the effect on the victim is so disgusting that he is more likely to be distracted. Though apparently not necessarily so, as the ending of your story shows!
I'm reminded of a story I had read in an old Houdini book about a ruse where someone is approached and asked to help two men sort out a bet between them, about how much molasses a hat can accomodate. In the course of this, a hat is filled with the stuff and suddenly it is jammed onto the victim's face and head. As he tries to remove the horribly sticky mess, it is enough time for the men to take his wallet and watch and disappear! |

The mustard ruse is a good one, but a bit "messy"...Perhaps a quick squirt of invisible ink would be a "cleaner" (and more "magical") way to misdirect and leave no tell-tale traces to your crime... !

I haven't had a bottle of disappearing ink for many (many) years... decades.
Hope they still make it. If not, you could always use the "real thing" and offer to pay for the victim's shirt following the mishap (and misdirection). Of course, the cash you would give could be easily come from the victim's own wallet... providing you did your job well. lol Best regards. Jonathan

Thanks for the link Michel! Leave it to "you" to find and provide such a resource.
... but be careful "who" you use it on. Some "victims" may understandably react harshly... after all, how would you feel if a performer spilled ink on you and ruined your new shirt?! Perhaps this was a bad suggestion to begin with. Forget it was even mentioned. I invite any member reading this thread to report my post and have it deleted. But instead of checking off the box that says... "Flaming" for the reson of the report, check off the box that says "inking", as the "raison d'etre". Best regards. Jonathan PS: " , ? ; !!! " Marcel Marceau, Feb 30, 1945. Michel, are you certain that Marcel Marceau said all that, in 1945? Are you "quoting him" are were the quotes part of his exclamations?

It's the parisian accent, I'm afraid.

I once worked in a magic shop and we often squirted strangers with disappearing ink. There are a few fabrics in which the ink disappears, but returns after washing. Also, DI does not do well on suede. We had a few irate customers return with an item of clothing which we had to pay for, so... A tiny bit of caution is advised.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Nice to hook up agian with you on the Café! Thanks for your cautionary note about Disappearing ink (DI). ...I hope you didn't use the DI when signing your checks to pay for the ruined garments! (lol) Best regards. Jonathan

Ha! Now that would have been great, DI for my check to pay for the DI-sasterous fabric stain. If only the ink would last for two hours or so before the vanish...
Nice to see you again online too, Jonathan! I've been on the road for the last couple of months. Best wishes! Autumn

Hey, Jlevey! Well, I perform all over the world, but I have never performed in Canada, except for on the reserves (reservations).
Why? Well, maybe this is a myth, but I heard from other magicians that crossing the border can be a problem. I heard that you can lose your show to a qualified Canadian magician when you tell customs what you are there to do. They sort of "pickpocket" your show and distribute it to someone else. (Sounds a bit dubious to me, but I have had more than one magician tell me this.) Any insight?

Back to pickpocketing and misdirection: In Europe, one way to pick your pocket here is to work in threes on a train. One person throws food at you, the other person comforts you and helps you clean up, while the third picks your pocket or cuts the bottom of your purse. I would happily take a french fry in the face rather than what Ragman was telling about. Talk about misdirection...
