Hello Hello,
Just looking into the possibility of getting 1 dove for my magic acts. I love animals and can take very good care of them, especially birds, having two macaws growing up. Where could I find a dove suitble for magic and at what age should the dove be to start training? I'd probably like the smallest possible, but also generally a species that is very tame to begin with. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dxsare

Obtaining doves depends on where you are located. Many sources have been listed here on the Café, just look through the polly forum and you'll find them. As for which breed, that also has been discussed. White Java, and ringnecks are the usual choices. You shouldn't start handling your doves until they are about 6 weeks old or more and are no longer dependent on their parents for food.
The training depends on how much time you can spend each day with them. Typically, about 2 months of daily practice will get them used to you and not afraid. Then you can start working with them for your act. Macaws and doves are two different things. You really should get some books or vids before thinking of getting your dove. Tony Clark, Andy Amyx, Greg Frewin, General Grant to name a few are excellent resources as is the encyclopedia of dove magic by Chavez. Once you have a good understanding of what is necessary, then and only then should you actually get a bird.
