Hello, all. Longtime lurker, recent joiner, thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself...

I'm not much of a performer, not even on an amateur basis; even calling myself a hobbyist sometimes feels like I might be overstating the case. I'm just a dabbler who came to magic through a convergence of several indirect routes, more through books than anything else -- not instructional tomes (although I've certainly read a few of those too), but biographies and historical accounts. When most people feel the itch of curiosity about magic, it's usually about how a trick is accomplished. I scratch my jaw over that too sometimes, but what I really enjoy trying to wrap my mind around is the frame of mind that goes along with being a magician. The sometimes thin, sometimes broad line separating the personality of performer and persona... the motivations which can cause someone like, say, William Robinson to embrace such a pervasive level of commitment to secrecy... the way that applications of misdirection, patter, and plain old showmanship can be spotted elsewhere in life, in everything from salesmanship to politics to everyday conversations. Over the years, following my curiosity randomly from one aspect of magic to another, it's grown as an interest in my life and is currently stronger than ever.

Lest all of that sound too dry and ivory tower-ish, I hasten to add that I also have an inevitable and sincere enjoyment of magic whenever I'm lucky enough to see it performed. I also practice a few simple effects myself, although my skills (and perhaps more importantly, my confidence) are such that I rarely attempt to do so in front of anyone.

Anyway, I'm pleased to be here among you all, stretching out to dip my toes a little further into a rich and varied community. Thanks for listening to me ramble like this.

Thanks for the hospitality, everyone. I look forward to settling in, having fun, learning a few things, and hopefully even offering comments of my own once in a while when I have something worth sharing.
