Just playing around with my cards today and I caught the reflection of the cards off my wedding ring. Has anyone here used a wedding ring as a shiner or does it seem to be too obvious? Seems like it would fly in most home games but I could be mistaken.

It would be interesting to see how you see reflections when the ring is on your "ring" finger ? I suspect the cards would have to be held in an awkward position if you kept the ring on your "ring" finger ?

You may also need a wide wedding band to see cards easier...my wedding band is too thin and is full of scratches Smile

But, using rings as shiners has been done for years Smile

You must have some SERIOUS bling as a wedding band brother.

I would bet to do it accuratly would require a serious study of the band while you did it. BUT I don't know. Work it out!

But ring shiners seem obvious to me. Who knows, it may just be crazy enough to work.

Well, maybe you could try holding the ring in the pinky. That method was described in Billion Dollar Bunko. But it wouldnt be a wedding ring anymore since wedding rings are worn on ringfingers, right? Smile

Just my two cents,

In any game over three/six, I along with every other player at the table do a full examination of the playing area for shiners, accidental or intentional.

We've all read "Sharps and Flats", "Gambling Scams", and every other book out there that has tales of the many forms a shiner can take.
We've also all seen Forte, Malek, Piacente and every other cheating DVD available.

This kind of stuff just doesn't fly in a real game where the limit is 3/6 and up.

Wasn't it Beetlejuice that used one on his shoe to glimpse up the ladies' skirts? Hey, you could tell the table it's not for cheating...

If you're working the game and think it'll fly, don't you think you'll be the first to know "yes/no"? The amount of practice and nerve it takes to think, "yeah, this'll get the money" makes high stakes play the only play worth it... and consequently, the toughest.

Bill shiners, cigar shiners, coffee shiners, chip stack shiners, ring shiners, pipe shiners, shouldn't we know about them ALL by now? Smile

That would mean they just don't fly....period.

Never say they would never fly. This may lead into the dangerous waters of complacency. Shiners are difficult to handle and involve considerable risk because, if discovered they leave tangable evidence of cheating. Professionally handled by palming a small mirror and reading the cards 'at leasure' as it were, this can become a powerful cheating tool at the card table and its very difficult to detect.

Paul,

Sounds like we should stick with marked cards....and if you use daub or Juice Dust you can use a borrowed deck to minimize the evidence Smile

It's fun making an "ad-hoc" juice deck without someone's knowledge ... and they would never suspect that their own deck is marked Smile

Ive heard of someone using a drink. Something like coke (has to be something dark. Just let it get settled then you have a reflective surface to look at.
you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but never all of the people all the time.

Yeah coffee works too. But it's a bit akward and obvious when you are dealing right over a cup on the table.

Cell phones, money clips are also common....People have been even known to have glued a stack of chips together so they can place a mirror in them...also placing a mirror on the back of a coin or a chip is also possible.

Be creative Smile

Years ago I placed a mirror inside a himber ring so I would be able to open and close the mirror.

The fish think that the "no drinks on the table" rule is because of spillage, and we let them think that. In reality it keeps a multitude of drink-shiners off the table.

NO chips or cash on the table but the official chips used in the game takes out the bill-shiners and the chip-stack shiners.

Anybody with bling on their fingers or wrists gets a through going over from EVERYBODY at the table, out go the ring shiners.

Any player smoking a pipe or cigar gets the once over from EVERYBODY at the table which removes the pipe and cigar shiners. These are so well known you'd have to be nuts to try one.

Which leaves palming a shiner in and out of the game, and as mentioned above there are FAR more effective ways to get the money, and don't leave an obvious cheating device to be discovered just prior to your *** kicking!

Can't you just get someone to deal the game so you don't have to strip search each other before you can play? I mean if everyone is that concerned about security at your games, why would you let each other deal the cards at all?

I mean if someone is going to grab me by my ankles, turn me upside down, and shake me, looking for cheating devices...Maybe I don't want that guy handling the cards either.

I have to admit Expert, juice dust is definitely THE way forward when it comes to marking cards on the fly. Unbeatable and one of the least risky ways of cheating in this manner. I almost can't bear to discuss it in public.

I am inclined to agree with Vandy on the security issue which raises as many problems as it solves. A cheat or cheats worth their salt researching the game would probably target a softer spot in any case.

Oh I'd definately look for a softer spot with my meager skills.

But in a game where every player is aware of Forte, Malek,Piacente and seemingly suspect each other of studying them for other than academic/protection purposes. It seems to me you'd get someone to deal the game. I don't where you guys can even find the time to look at your cards, you're too busy hawking each other. LOL

Vandy, we're all friends and have been playing together for a long time. Much of what we do is done casually and without any real "OK, now we check everybody out".
Keeping everybody honest has kept our game going without problems for quite a few years now.

What we are more cautious of as a group is when somebody new comes in to play.

As we usually play 5/10, we presume that any new player one of the regulars brings along is either an experienced player(worth keeping at least an initial eye on), or (more preferably) a Big Fat Fish.

I hear ya. I'm lucky, all my friends that play cards are clueless. Not clueless players, but clueless to many of the things that can go down. And even though I don't cheat my friends,I never wise em up. I like it that way.

When I play with a combo of friends and strangers, I keep my eyes open for my friends. God protects fools and little children. I'm kind of a guardian angel, I check things out for them but I never tell them I was looking for things and certainly never what I may look for.

BTW There has been only one time in my life where I had a bad feeling and felt there was something going on in a game I was involved in. I have been trying to get these guys back into a game for several months but haven't gotten a second look at them. I took two terrible beats that night and I still have my suspicions. I watched them all night. If they did anything at all, they were probably signaling. But I still don't know.
