Just got back from the ECSS in Hickory NC and thought I'd talk about Vol 6 and 7 of Steve Beam's Semi-Automatic books for a minute.
On Saturday night myself, Karbonkid, Robbie Mooreland (who's hands are unreal), and several other guys asked Steve to see a few effects. What followed was an hour and a half of some of the most entertaining card magic that I have ever witnessed. Steve, "off the top of his head" doing only his original effects from the upcoming two volumes, proceeded to hammer all of us through the floor. His stuff from the new books made me feel like a total laymen again. I haven't been fooled by so many effects in a row in years! There are only a few people in the magic world that can take a person (me) who has been in the game for over 15 years and teach them exactly how little they know! Being reduced to a giggling laymen again was the highlight of the ECSS Convention. I love to be fooled and as you know, it gets harder and harder every year to be fooled anymore. Not to mention the next to near impossibility to find someone who can fool you and completely entertain you at the same time. You don't need me to tell you that all of Steve's work is the highest grade card magic than you can find, and that he has a list of contributors in each book that is unbelievable. What you may need though, unless you have had the pleasure of seeing Steve work, is someone to express what a legend the man truly is. There is only one Steve Beam in the world of magic, just as there was only one Dai Vernon, Larry Jennings, Mike Skinner, and so on. To just recommend getting these books is a huge understatement, so I'll just say if you are looking for the strongest card magic available..it's definitely in Vol 6 and 7. Steve has a pre-release special that is going on his web-site as well. It's a hellova deal. Here's to Steve, hand's down my favorite magician to watch do his thing. If you get an opportunity to see one of his lectures or attend a convention that he will be hanging at, RUN there. You'll get to join a list of great magicians who see Steve as what he is...one of, if not the, best guy on the planet with a pack of cards. Best, Clark

I just ordered both books on his pre-publication special, and he informed me via email that they will ship next week. My experience with him in the past leads me to believe that these books WILL be on time, so I highly urge anyone considering these books to get them with the pre-publication special. It IS a large chunk of cash to lay out, but we're talking TWO big books of what should be great card magic.

Aw, geez, and here I was trying to reduce my monthly expenditure on magic books. How am I to be expected to pass up a deal like this?

Hmmm- I wonder whether Clark's description of Steve Beam's 90 minutes of uninterrupted magic means that there will be a lot of impromptu material. I have only read vol 2 of this series, but was relatively disappointed by how many of the effects required set up (often half-deck, or full-deck stacks). As I would never take out a new deck for no reason in mid-performance, the result for me was that I could only really perform one or two effects from the book in one session. I know that self-working effects often require a stack of some sort, but frankly this material was not for me.
Do the other volumes of Semi-Automatic Card Tricks offer more impromptu-ish material? |

Re: Impromptu
I wondered about that myself. I have SACT 3 -- I'd heard it was the best of the then-four volume series -- but I was disappointed to find quite a bit of set-ups. Not a big deal, I know -- some set-ups are only a few cards -- but I was hoping to find more impromptu items. Beam's an excellent writer and magician, so I'll probably pick up these volumes anyway and then perhaps investigate the others. |

I can't speak for the volumes just yet (other than the sheer power of the effects that I witnessed), but I do know that Beam's outlook on a set-up is if it's 12 card or less he really doesn't look at it as a problem. Ton of the stuff throughout his work takes 2 to 4 cards which I don't even consider a stack, personally.
I do have to say that he has a knack for getting into his work in an effortless manner. I really hope that you guys (who haven't had the pleasure) get to see him do his material. The stuff in his series has a WHOLE NEW LIFE when you see the man do it. It's just incredible. There is a quadruple prediction effect that he did from the 6 or 7 that is totally impromptu. The effect DEVASTATED my ***!!! I shuffled, I made the decisions, blah, blah, blah. He had NO CONTROL over the process and yet still, he killed me with it. You guys are going to love that one!!! Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I just wanted to lend a word. Best, Clark

Can't wait for those...
Andrew, in order of my preference starting with the best. SACT 3,4,1,(2&5) In fact, I will read them again shortly. I am sure to rediscover gems in there... There are some great commercial effects in there and some magician killers... Jean-Luc |

Thanks a lot Jean-Luc of your valuable feedback.
Can anyone please kindly tell me in which volume that contains the most impromptu card materials in SACT? Thanks and appreciate the input. I think you should take the plunge, take advantage of the sale, and just buy a volume to two. :)

Regarding the number of tricks in these books that can be done "from a shuffled deck in use," Steve Beam has a really cool feature in his books (starting with vol 3) called the "Routine Builder." This is a handy chart that lists all tricks alphabetically with page number, whether it can be done from a shuffled deck or not, the number of cards in play, whether a table is required or not, any special requirements (blank card, telephone, 2 decks, etc.) and, for those with a setup, a brief description of the setup(i.e. "2 sevens on top of deck," or "AS-KS on top,").
I took the time to count the tricks that can be performed from a completely shuffled deck for both volumes 3 and 4, and it looks like it's about 60(!) for each volume. I don't have the time or energy to go through volumes 1 and 2, which don't have the Routine Builder feature, to see what percentage of those can be done from a shuffled deck. By the way, while I understand that no set-up tricks are desireable, I personally would never limit myself like that, as there are some amazing tricks that do require some setup, and it seems worth it to me to have those in my repertoire as well. And, as has been noted, it is a skill that can be acquired to be able to set up the deck "on the fly." |

It does appear that Steve will be shipping out the books, as the charge just appeared on my credit card. Imagine that--he took my preorder and DIDN'T CHARGE my credit card until he ACTUALLY SHIPPED the books. Classy, classy. I'm really looking forward to these books.
