I am a magician and am wondering about the levitation gag where a clown comes out supposedly floating under a cloth that goes from his body to the stage. he drops the cloth and he is holding two sticks with feet on them and he is walking under the cloth. I want to use it as a comedy opening in a show but need more info on it. how to build it etc.

The book "Clown Act Omnibus" has the information you're looking for.

If memory serves, it's also in the Cub Scout Handbook.

It is also in the Tarbell course. Volume 8 I believe if memory serves me.
I also remember seeing a version without the reveal in UF Grants Victory Carton Illusions. |

It's in the comedy magic section. I don't have access to my Tarbell books right now so I can't give the exact page or book. I am working purely on memory.
The one in Tarbell actually has a nice little touch that is more than just two poles with shoes. |

Has anyone ever tried this as a bit of clowning, or as magic? I think I'm going to. I will surely let you know how it plays. I feel like potential is there, but I've never seen or heard of it actually being performed.

It is performed all the time. And it gets great reactions. Especially if the person levitating is really good at it, it can actually fool some. And then the punchline happens when it is exposed.
As another note, UF Grant had an interesting version in his Victory Carton Illusions booklet. This can actually be played seriously too. Although not the same as the clown gag, this video has a levitation spoof bit that is funny. You can get the same reactions from a crowd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2j-5nF0E20 |
