What's funny?

The Magic or the Magician?

or do you make it a combination of the both?

Interesting question.

I think the magician makes the magic funny. As an example, I look at Mac King's cloak of invisibility routine. The effect he's doing isn't funny by itself, but it becomes hilarious when he performs it. Some effects are created to be funny, but unless the magician doing them has the character to pull them off, they have a tendency to seem less funny. Just my thoughts.

The magician should be funny. The magic should be amazing. And then have a combination of both. Variety is the spice of life and the show.

To answer the question in the simplest possible way let me ask this.

Ever see a guy using someone else's lines, jokes and tricks? Watch how uncomfortable he is and usually bombs? The "magic" wasn't funny, the original guy doing it was.

Buster:

Interesting? Not really... Just ponderous. It's always the comedian. That's why a good performer can make anyone's material work, but a bad performer can't make the best material work.

Sometimes it's just funny that a magician is trying to be funny.

I do find it funny how freequently and without real qualification the "G" word gets applied.

Just out of curiosity, and I don't mean this with evil intentions of debate, so I will post it here for an open ended question.
What would be your definition of a "Genius", and who would you classify as a genius in comedy or comedy magic.........if your definition can qualify one as such??

Comedy genius with magical bent - Tommy Cooper springs to mind.

I got to agree with Jon D., I completely forgot:

Unfunny Trick + Unfunny Magician = Uncontrollable Giggles

This is why I can no longer go to SAM meetings

Groucho, Buster Keaton, Dangerfield, all qualify.

I refuse to put names to magicians as it will cause a stir.

No particular prop or routine will make you funny. I believe natural comedic ability is something you are born with. No matter how much "comedy" junk the dealers sell you, you're either funny or you're not. It's hard to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Some other names I would like to add to "G" list are Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, George Carlin and Steve Martin.

Yeah, I hate it when I get one of those audiences that just has no funny in their heads. I tried to think of a way to limit them from the show, kinda like the "You have to be this tall to ride" signs. Just haven't been able to come up with a "Who has funny in their head" detector. I'm no give up sort of fellow so just give me time and I will be there on stage when they are rolling on the floor in laughter of their own accord. Then I'll be able to make regular bank deposits.

Every year, Reader's Digest puts out an issue on humor. It came out this month and there are some incredible articles on clinical research into humor and the types of humor. I highly recommend this issue!

MOST of Steve Martin. Watch Pink Panther and tell me he falls there!
Oh wait Peter Sellers too!

You're right, Pink Panther was a bit of a disappointment. And yes, Peter Sellers, definitely!
