Well if genius includes an act of such originality making it impossible to compare and copy (without going unoticed) Than I would quickly add my pal Victor Borge!!
Ephes. 2:8-9

Funny Trick + UnFunny Magician = Not Funny

UnFunny Trick + Funny Magician = Funny

Funny Trick + Funny Magician = Genius

I do find it funny how freequently and without real qualification the "G" word gets applied.

That's a null point, really, as the word genius was being applied to a situation rather than a person. The word genius as an exclamation of delight at a situation cannot be compared to a list of actual performers who have earned that right.

It is the magician who is funny........I make a lot of comedy props but one person can show them and it is not funny but another can show them and the audience is in hysterics !!!! The comedy trick or prop gives the opportunity to be funny !!!

The item below is revised from an item I put up on Ring 2100 a few daze ago.

During a recent workshop on Comedy for middle school students, we talked about
the following elements.

1. Surprise
2. Imitation
3. Contrast
4. Repitition
5. Repitition
6. Repitition
7. Familiarity
8. Exageration
9.Distortion

An example of # 1 is when audience is aware of something the magician is
not aware. Then magician can become aware and do a "double take".

An example of # 2 is when you imitate a dialect, well known person or
sound such as the fun "baby cry", during your "patter".

An example of # 3 is when two magicians working together produce e.g. a
long appearing cane versus a shorter appearing cane. (We used the last
example in a recent production of "Godspell".

Comedy happens in the mind of the audience member and expands to the group.
It may much easier to get a group of 1400 audience members howling with laughter than just one. Of course it is possible to break up one person.

Can you think of other elements that you use in your programs and share
them with us.

Neither - funny is all in the audience's head.

I totally agree, its all in the presentation. You don't have to be a funny person to be a comedian. You don't have to be an amazingly talented magician to go out and work 7 nights a week doing gigs.

And you could be completley talentless and still get laughs.

There are no rules!

Anything may go.

Wheres theres laughs to be had, anybody may take them.

What a shame it's only the acts that have to pass auditions and not audiences!

"How dare you say you saw a wire attached to my styrofoam z*****! I certainly won't be showing you the trick where I pour liquid into 2 pages of a newspaper from the other side of the world, not available in this city, dated 10 years ago and with a phoney headline!
Neeeeeeeeeeeeext!"

I have to disagree with you Doug, funny is an acquired talent through many trial and error performances. Some of the funny lines coming from the spectators themselves and used in future performances. I totally su**** as a performer when I first started. Through many years of performing have I become funny.

I have to agree with john over this one

its true some people are born with an aptitude for funny , so funny kind of comes natural to them

but then again if one practises hard enough and studies the art of being funny , I'm pretty sure they will do well

one techinique I like to do is practising and memorising adlibs ( aka memorising spontanious things which happen dunring your show and are funny , ) so that I may use them again when a simalar situation happens again , to the audience it may look impromptu , but trust me its all part of a well rehearsed routine

The most important thing I feel is timing and creativity in the individual who is trying to be funny... I would walk into an old aged home and the first thing I would say is "Oh my God, I have an audience of children only today? where did the elders go?" or I could go like, tap the mic and "Can you hear me?" and everybody goes "YES!" and you are like "That question was not for you, it was for me. I wanted to ensure that I can still hear myself".... Now, you could do this with a smile on ur face or my way, have a straight poker face and they ll laugh more ( I dunno why? but they seem to enjoy when I crack jokes with a serious face)...

I ll have fun and I ll take care... bye (to me)
