Hi All!
I know it is a bit early, but thought I would throw this question out there. How many of you are either attending the 2007 Convention, or at least considering attending? Even if you are just thinking about it, let us know. No harm no foul.... =) Remember, the earlier you register, the lower the registration fee and the better your seats at the shows. Also, If you have any special requests, such as disability, hard of hearing etc, need special seating please let them know when you register by emailing John Apperson at.. sam@appsmagic.com I look forward to hearing from many of you and meeting more of you at the convention. I would like to attend, but the price is a little out of line. I've talked to seveal other magicians who feel the same way. It's hard for us working stiffs to shell out $300 - 500, and then fork up money for a room, meals etc. Maybe another time ........ Jim |

Hi Jim,
Thanks so much for posting. I totally understand where you are coming from. Let me give you a little bit of information and insight in hopes that it may not only help you but help others reading this post as well. The one issue that comes up a lot that I want to make a point to address here is the difference between the 07 in Dallas and the combined IBM/SAM convention in 08. A lot of folks who have talked to me over the past several months have been confused on this notion alone and I wanted to try to add some clarity to is. So in summary the convetions are as follows: 1- 2007 SAM convention - this convention is the standard and exciting national SAM convention being held in Dallas this year. 2- 2008 Convention: this is the combined combined convention in Louisville, KY. In relation to pricing and such for the 2007 convention here are some of the rates for registration as is posted on the SAM website at: http://www.magicsam.com Category Rate (on/before Mar. 1, 2007) Rate ADULTS SAM Member Member/spouse $159.00 (After March 1, 2007) $199.00 SYM Parent Before march 1 $159.00 After March 1 - $199.00 Non Members (Before)$199.00 (After)$229.00 One Day Registrations (member) $99.00 $99.00 One Day Registrations (non-member) $109.00 $109.00 CHILDREN SYM Members (before)$95.00 (after)$120.00 16 & Over (Inc; SYM Siblings) (before)$95.00 (after)$120.00 Under 16 ( Incl SYM Siblings) (before) $95.00 (after)$120.00 One Day Registration (under 16) (before)$65.00 (after)$65.00 The above information should be a general guide and useful information in regards to registration pricing for the 2007 convention in Dallas. I hope it is of help to you. What my husband and I do, is to hold some money aside from our performances that goes into our vacation account. We often realize that it only takes us a few shows throughout the year to give us more than enough to cover the cost of the vacation. Because we know that we attend the convention every year, it gives us plenty of time to plan out finances in advance. Another thing to consider, which has helped us and others, is that the entire convention can be a complete tax write off. My husband and I are working professionals and we are able to write off a majority of the convention as a business expense. It is certainly something to think about when you are working out whether you can attend or not. I hope this information is of help to you and others. I cannot stress enough how much fun and friendship that you can get from attending the SAM convention each year. It is simply a wonderful convention that always inspires us, improves our magic and allows us to meet new friends and spend time with old ones. If anyone has any questions at all that I might be able to answer please let me know. If I cannot answer them for you, I will be able to direct you to the folks that can. It is going to be a convention not to miss! The line ups for shows are coming together and are looking fantastic! There are sure to be a lot of great magical suprises in store for those who attend. I will try and loook for you to be able to at least say hello and shake your hand. Like last year, I will be providing magic Café member stickers to the convention. They will be by the registration booth area and you can just peel one off and stick it to your name badge.
Last year the stickers worked really well to allow folks in attendance to know who is a fellow Café member. Hope to do it again this year and meet additional members. If you have not registered already, you should try to do so soon to get it out of the way and get good seats for the evening shows. I hope to meet you there and hope others may chime in here who may be thinking of attending as well. If anyone has any questions, please let me know. Kyle

I am planning on attending, so I hope all goes as planned. I cut a Disney World internship short so that I can be available for the convention. I look forward to seeing you again
I am excited about the Latin show that was just announced! I saw many of those acts in Stockholm this summer and I love getting an opportunity to see them again. Hugo Valenzuela's act was like actually being in a sci-fi movie and I can honestly say it was one of my favorite acts in the stage competition. He definitely deserved his originality award. Brando y Silvana have incredible stage presence and great theatrical flair. Juan Ordeix has a wonderul mentalism act which I definitely enjoyed. As FISM draws to an end, one has seen more manipulation than one would ever want to and many acts seem the same. David Sousa was one of the few manipulation acts which held my attention for the entire act. It should be a good show!

Looking forward to Dallas. Richard

Right now I'm thinking about it. Not 100% sure yet since I'd have to fly in and worry about transportation costs to and from the hotel on top of other expenses. I guess that does bring up a couple of questions though. For folks flying in, how does one get to the hotel from the airport if they aren't renting a car? Will this be a reasonable and a simple ordeal to accomplish? Also, what resturants are available inside the hotel? Are fastfood chains available within a short walk of the convention area? Hope to make it there.

- If you are flying in and not renting a car there are several options for you that might be helpful. Most hotels have airport shuttles where you call them and pay a small fee for them to meet you at the airport and drive you over. Of course there are always taxis and also various shuttle services that you can use directly from the airport itself. One thing we do here in Philadelphia is fly out as a group or meet a group at the detsination airport at the same time. then we can rent a shuttle and split the cost between us saving money all the wya around.
- Yes, the hotel has several restaurants in the hotel itself. These vary from fine dining elegance to more laid back and every day. Some of these include: - Recently awarded the AAA Four-Diamond award for food and service, Chaparral Restaurant a historic name to Dallas. With its warm, elegant setting, Chaparral brings casual dining to the hotel's 38th floor. You'll enjoy our creative menu set amidst the surround of a magical panoramic view of Dallas' city lights. The adjacent library allows privacy for exclusive events, while the restaurant's lounge is the place to sip a favorite port or cognac while listening to great entertainment. - Pearl Street Café offers traditional and contemporary cuisine with three meals served daily in a cozy setting. - For sports action on large screen TVs, your favorite refreshments and snacks, check out Players Sports Bar. - Tiffany Rose Lobby Lounge Lobby level piano lounge serving cocktails and light fare. Let music and the sounds of piano wake the senses. - For lighter fare, Bagels on Bryan offers a large selection of fresh, flavorful bagels, spreads, sandwiches, pastries, specialty coffees and juices. Menus for these are available online at the hotel website. here is the direct link: http://www.adamsmark.com/dallas/dining.asp - Yes there are many fast food places and other food establishments within walking distance of the hotel. Hope this helps you a little bit. Let me know if I can be of further assistance to you. My pleasure. It is a wonderful time and experience and one you will remember for a long time. I always make new friends and the shows will be outstanding. Kyle

If southwest airlines serves your area, look into flying with them, their Dallas hub and headquarters, Love field is much closer to the convention site than DFW. A trip from DFW generally entails taking the Surtran bus, which will be about the cheapest mod of transportation from DFW, a Cab will set you back a pretty nice trick from some dealer, $40 up one way. Most shuttles are for the hotels near DFW, mostly motels, not the convention site. From Love to the convention hotel is not that far and a cab ride won't cost you an arm and a leg.

I am glad you brough up the different airports. I am correct in remembering that love field is the best way to fly.
As I recall this hotel (which was where the TAOM was held), there are several food courts in the hotel itself. There was also a nice mexican style resturant in easy walking distance. The theater was about 2- 2 1/2 blocks was which was not a bad walk. I still have to decided if I will drive. It sure is nice to not having to worry about packing and flying but 18 hours is a lot of driving. Richard

Photius, I am GLAD you have provided a "major piece of information" for folks flying in for the convention. Can you imagine folks flying in and being charged $40 or more for a one way taxi ride to the convention center or not being able to get public trans there from DFW? Many, many thanks to you for bringing this up my friend. I had started looking into booking a flight into DFW but after reading this thread, I'm glad I didn't. I would hope this important info gets posted on the SAM web site so attendees flying in will know this important bit of info.

Kyle and I are looking into Southwest and others. Right now they only go up to May on the website, so we will have to wait until January or so to book our flight should we decide to go with Southwest. It is still a bit early to book a flight though.
A great resource though for finding flight info is http://www.kayak.com it lists all flights and prices. If anyone else has any tidbits of information please share. Thanks Kelly |
