Do you use any alternative to "roughing fluid" ?

Safety first always.
In Prof. Hoffmann's Book "Latest Magic", he used Diachylon. A method that allows you to put on a thin coat is to dissolve the diachylon in carbon tetrachloride. I have not tried it. I'm not comfortable working with carbon tetrachloride outside a chemistry lab. I feel it's safer and cheaper to buy it from a shop. MagicRMA

Spray on fixative, available from any art supply store works quite well. Simply mask the parts of the cards that you don't want roughed.

Some hair sprays have worked in the past.

Check the archives of the Café; also I think Testor's Matte Spray works.

The best alternative to Roughing Fluid/Spray that I have found and been using for the last 20 years is Krylon Matte Finish Spray #1311. You can find this in Art/Craft supply stores. Unlike Testor's Matte Spray, which is made to be used on plastic/paint finishes; Krylon's is made to be used on paper. Imperceptible when used on cards.
DO NOT USE HAIR SPRAY! Cheers!
